Just wondering if you guys know the safest, best, free areas to sleep. Where are they? What train stations? Bus station? Airport? What country what places are the best? Is it possible to always sleep for free?

raoulduke 08-15-2006 10:39 PM

I'm not an expert but check out http://www.sleepinginairports.net/ it has reviews for different airports around the world and also a section for sleeping free in other places.

Good Luck

If you opt to sleep in a field or something, I would suggest always ask the farmer's permission first...you ARE trespassing. There are often refuges along hiking paths, but they would be pretty far from cities if that's what you plan to see.

you can can become an Amish and live as a nomad Amish from amish town to amish town, hehehe. No I have no clue where you could stay for free, I guess the parents is the best option for that. Sorry I can't help on this one.

i have a tent so i tend to shoot for the underbrush where little light can reach you, in frankfurt most of my sleep has been captured in the bushes behind the south rail depot, i can sleep thru the trains. in paris there was an abanadoned lot with grafiti and grass
in rosslare i slept on the beach mostly

I've slept in airports a lot, you tend to form relationships with the other people around you and gang together and protect each others stuff..

By the by, if you choose to sleep in Gatwick airport (london) go upstairs to where the shops are, there are lots of chairs with no arm rests (very key) and places to box yourself in.

I don't like railway stations as much, too much traffic can just pass through there for no reason.

I've got a house to sleep in in many countries and ALWAYS inform them when I'm in the area, even if it's just for security reasons or I need help.

I've slept on ferries... they're fairly safe... so if you travel on them try to travel overnight... same with trains.

Often hostels will offer free room and board if you do cleaning for a couple hours during the day.

Always ask around.

airports are far better than train stations and keep in mind that many train stations actually close between midnight and like 4 or 5 AM....damn you barcelona sants :fyou:

omisan 08-21-2006 12:01 AM

Brookers - even if Barcelona-Sants were open 24/7, you would NOT want to sleep there. It's the pickpocketing capital in what could arguably be the pickpocketing capital of Europe ;)

Interesting thing about the Netherlands - techincally, all unenclosed property (front yards, back yards, etc.) are considered public, so by the letter of the law, you're allowed to sleep/camp on them... of course, it's considered proper etiquette to ask/notify the owners. Then again, unless you're out in the countryside, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone with a yard!

My Swedish friends say the same thing. That as long as you ask, you can sleep on any property. I've also heard that parks are free and you won't get hassled as you would here in the states. Not sure if that is true?

c0urt 08-21-2006 02:22 AM

i was told by a german person last night that it is true.
as as for the states, my favorite trick still is gas station and resturant roofs, just make sure you leave quietly

DJ_VeeeNoM 08-21-2006 08:34 AM

You know what belive it or not, I have an option that is pretty sweet, but can get you ins serious trouble. From all the hotels I've stayed for a long period of time I've always wander around them and for some reason there is always a room that is open as in no one there and the door is open 24/7, I don't know why but hey it's an option if you are desperate. Next time I stay in a hotel I'll ask the staff.

MeTurk 08-21-2006 08:39 AM

Couchsurfing.com Locals put you up for the night, I haven't used it yet but I've hosted a good few people.

MissChick 08-21-2006 10:28 AM

I've slept upstairs in the Gatwick airport too I had a great sleep the only reason that I woke up is my friend was taking pictures of me and the security guard was standing there. They thought it was funny you could see down my shirt....

Shawn and I also had a pretty good sleep in the athens airport floor waiting for out next flight.
