I really enjoyed Lisbon. It had a different feel than many other cities that I really enjoyed. Definitely check out the Alfama area - really unique. I went on a walking tour that ended up just being my friend and I, and I'd definitely recommend it! Also, there's nice beaches a 20 minute train ride away that was 2 euros or something (though that may have been because I had Eurail). I stayed at the Lazy Crow Hostel, and it was one of my favorites after 2 months in Europe. A really friendly girl runs it, and it's really homey with friendly people. If you're in Portugal for a while, check out Lagos. I'm kinda crazy about it.

If you're into castles, then take a day trip north to Sintra. They have a number of ones, including a Moorish one on a hillside above a forest, an 18th Century "nobleman's folly" type one with some outlandish decorations, and so on. Definitely worthwhile...

WWM I took nearly an identical photo of Sintra myself! I agree that Sintra is a must-see.
In regards to accomodation I found the Tourist Information centre really helpful. They organised a twin share room at a hotel really close to Rossio Square which was 11euro a night each. ev |
if you go to lisboa, you have to stay at Oasis Hostel...it is FABULOUS
they have those huge rainfall showers, a really comfy living room with leather sofa and a big outdoor patio with a palm tree!! The staff is great and Damien will take you out at night....soooo much fun! |
