Hi,

Planning to take a trip to France, especially the southern part (Perpignan, Carcassone, Avignon, Montpellier etc) and I simply wonder if anyone here has any experience when it comes to cheap hostels. Can you find a bed somewhere for maybe around 10-15 euros per night or is it more expensive? Honestly I don´t care about the standard (you never do when you're out of money you know), just want a bed to get some sleep.

Any experienced backpacker who can help me?

I stayed in the YHA hostel in Carcassone and highly recommend it. It is an experience being able to stay within the old city walls.

There is also a YHA in Montpellier which I did not stay at. We arrived in the afternoon and couldn't get a bed so you may wish to book early here.

More info about these can be found at this website

In Avignon I stayed at 'Hostel Bagatelle' which has camping as well as hostel accomodation. It is right on the river and you have to walk across the bridge into town, it is no frills but a cheap sleep.

Thank you very much for you help. I have just one more question: In the smaller towns/villages, for example Menton or St Raphael, is it hard to find cheap accommondation without reservation? Or are there hostels at which you just can drop-in?

I stayed at the Fréjus St-Raphael hostel and it was almost completely empty!
