Hostel House Rules? Posted 7-9-2002 18:15

I'm travelling with my boyfriend in Paris and Venice, and we will be sleeping in the same bed... can I get away with paying for just one bed in any hostels? Any suggestions?

my experience Posted 7-10-2002 11:47

In the past, I've had a few different experience
dealing with this.
Every hostel has their own set of rules. Most have
no curfew, but there is still an attendant at the front
desk.
These hostels are mostly in very old and often
really beautiful buildings as that is one of the
reasons why it's so nice to visit Europe, for the old
architecture.
Some hostels give you give keys so you can come
and go as you please, while others have you drop
your key off at the front desk each time. Usually
there is one entrance that everyone must pass
through. Some hostels have several floors with an
entrance to each floor, and if the front desk is on
the 2nd floor and you are staying on the 4th floor
and have your own key (coming and going as you
please) you can head up to your hostel room with
no one ever seeing you as you don't have to open
the door to the second floor. Follow me?

I always stayed in my own room. One hostel
wouldn't even let a friend into the room with me.
They had to wait in the lobby as I went to grab
something in my room.
Another, in Alicante Spain, I had my own key and
came back to the hostel both nights at around 4
am. I brought a girl home that first night, and she
went home the next day and no one said anything
to me.
In Portugal, Madrid, Paris, and Barcelona, I've had
keys to my own rooms at the hostels that I've
stayed in, coming and going as I pleased, with no
front desk.
As far as staying in a room with multiple beds. I
had a friend that took a girl to his dormitory for the
night in Switzerland. No fuss there.

Really, there is no way to give you a straight
answer to that question as every hostel is different.

Try it and the worse that can happen is that they
make him pay, but if you stay in a single, usually
you're going to pay around $30 a night which is
$15 a piece and about the same as you would pay
for a bed in a shared room.

Hope it helps!

Happy travels,

Tp

My only experience staying in a hostel was in the states, where both he and I had to show our room keys at the front desk to even get in... I was figuring it would kinda be hit or miss, but thanks for the info!!

one bed? Posted 7-15-2002 18:17

EmilyH,

When will you be travelling? I am studying in Rome for 3 months, Sept-Dec, and then my boyfriend will be joining me for a month-long (cold!) trip backpacking in Italy, Spain, and Amsterdam. If you could let me know how your stays in hostels went (if you were allowed to share a bed, where, how much did it cost, etc?) I would be very appreciative. Any other tips anyone has for travelling in the winter would be greatly appreciated!

Also, TP your site is great! I have found a lot of tips that I am sure will be very helpful.

Thanks, and good luck to all in their travels!
