Donations urgently needed


PHUKET: As the island continues its recovery from the tsunami that hit the island on Sunday morning, many hospitals and other organizations are calling for donations to assist victims.

Hospitals: clothes, shoes, counseling:

Wachira Phuket Hospital and other hospitals say there is an urgent need for shoes, shorts and T-shirts, especially in sizes large enough for foreigners.

Shoes are the priority right now. Many of the Thais and foreigners who were hit by the wave lost their shoes, with the result that many have foot injuries from walking or running on broken glass and other sharp objects.

Stores in Phuket have given many pairs of shoes, but most of these are in sizes suitable only for smaller people.

Any footwear large enough for foreigners is welcome; even rubber flip-flops would be a great help.

Many people have lost all or most of their clothes and need T-shirts or shorts to get by for a few days.

Donations may be taken direct to any of the major hospitals: Wachira Phuket, Phuket International; Patong Hospital; Mission Hospital; Bangkok Phuket Hospital.

Many victims are still walking around in a daze and; some have lost love ones or do not know where they are. Any person with the time to go to the hospitals and help is asked to do so. In some cases just hearing a calm voice amid the confusion can help.

Any amount of monetary aid is most welcome, I'm sure.

However, the URGENT (i.e. NOW) need is really clothes, shoes, utensils, gloves, tents etc.

To offer IMMEDIATE help, may I suggest contacting your local tv/radio or newspaper, and they can point you to regional groups of interest, such as a food or clothing drive, that can be assembled close to where you live.

Monetary donations can come next.

my brother was goin to penang but cancelled 2 days earlier for some reason. If not, he would've been there in the time it hit. He had a dream about it in late november. He said he walkin along the beach with his gf when a tidal wave (not a tsunami but still!) came and he ran and escaped up a cliff top. VERY LUCKY but now i realise just how bad it is for other families. We were away and had no idea whereabouts he could be but kl and maybe along the coast in malaysia. Hes comming home tonight.

Do you know that Aceh is the closest to the episentrum (central) of the quake?

80 thousand people died in Aceh alone, not to mention the other places. That 80 thousand are the amount of bodies managed to be evacuated, there are still many (hundreds, thousands, who knows?) corpses lying around in the cities waiting to be taken care of. In fact, the most wanted thing in Aceh right now is body bag (i don't know what it's called, you know.. the plastic bag to wrap up dead bodies). cholera dan dysentry plague are worried to happen if the cities are not cleaned up from the dead bodies immediately.

Refugees in Aceh really need ready-to-eat food, like biscuits, milk, etc. and of course clean water. foods that need to be processed like noodle or rice seems to be useless, since there is no place clean enough to cook and not enough water and cooking utensils.

To rebuild Aceh will need 10 zillion rupiahs (about 1 billion us dollars). So far, funds and aids have been coming from all over the world and a total of 500 million dollars are raised.

So guys, please, if any of you has any intention to donate, please donate some money. Here in Indonesia, material donations (like clothes, rice, noodles) are stuck in Jakarta and Medan, because there's not enough transportation to bring it to Aceh. So we are advised to donate money, so can be used to pay for transportation. Any amount would be most appreciated guys, please don't be ashamed to donate $5. believe me, that much amount can be used to buy 20 packs of sterilized milk, or 4 big cans of biscuits..
