Well it may, or it may not.
The sad truth is, (my own personal theory) the one reason why it is getting a lot of publicity in the western world is because this disaster is obviously of a monstrous scale...but also because it involves so many westerners.
If the casualties comprised mainly of local Asians, I think there would still be unprececented coverage on the news...at the begining...but it would eventually tail off.
And I don't think this is a debate about right or wrong, it's just a fact of life.
After all, how many of us know what happened in 1976, in China, when 240,000 were killed in an eqrthquake. (Personally, I didin't even know this...just read about it..)
And I did not even realise this, but in Iran, not only did they suffer from last year's disaster in Bam that claimed the lives of more than 31,000 people.
In 1990 Iran also suffered fatalities of over 50,000 from an eqrthquake.
AND in 1978, Iran again loss 25,000 lives, also from an earthquake.
But perhaps (again, my personal theory) due in part because it involved Iran, we in America were not always constantly reminded of those terrible news.
However, everywhere you go in the Northeast, seems like just about every other car you see on the road has a bumper sticker that says "Never forget 9-1-1...".
Sad and horrific as it was, the event on 9/11 is viewed by many locals here as THE disaster.
Again, there's no right or wrong. It's mostly a question of who is affected by which event....the media only follows the story that touches the majority of hearts and minds, in a specific region of interest.
