Thats why I DONT like traveling alone. Im sure with 3 or 4 of my friends (were all relatively big guys..not fat) that wouldnt happen. I always watch my surroundings and would never let some chick take me back to "her" place. But sorry to hear that dude

That's not Necessarily true I meet a load of Irish guys in Cezh that got their heads kicked in. It was a bit stupid of them to go out into the suburbs but they think they got done because of being a group of foreign lads.

I have to agree with that!

I see lots of fights between big guys!! The little ones get the hell outta there. lol. I guess it just depends on the situation.

But I do have to say it's probably not worth it to get into a fight with locals. Just keep your wits about you and try to avoid them. But it does happen and all you can do is just play it as smartly as you can.

It sounds like the muggings in Barcelona might be happening after drinking at night in bars... Should I be a bit more careful after going out and having a few while visiting Barcelona? Are there areas that would be more preferable to avoid muggings at night? Anyone with experience in this deptartment let me know.
Thanks!,
Bryan

Muggings and pickpocketing can happen at any time in Barcelona - particularly the latter, as the thieves there are among the wiliest in the world. But yes, you are especially a target when you're leaving the bars/clubs, especially at the crazy late/early hours that many aren't accustomed to. You tend to be off your guard after you've been partying all night... and even more so if you've been partying 'til dawn!

If you're partying toward the water in Barceloneta, where many of the clubs are, be on your watch for the hookers as you're headed home. Often, this is up the Ramblas, either to the many hostels there, to the newer hotels toward Paseig de Gracia, or the metro station waiting for the first train. They often latch on to you like there's no tomorrow, so instead of engaging them, just ignore them and keep walking. Or have a girl with you. They rarely bother you if you're already with a girl.

The tight/twisted turns of the Ciutat Vella (old city) can be a bit disorienting, and some muggers/pickpockets take advantage of that, so be careful barhopping or walking home around the area. Particularly in Raval, the more run-down portion that, if you were facing the ocean and the Columbus statue from the Ramblas, would be to your right.

Another place to be a little more aware of your surroundings is on the metro. You'll notice that even the locals wear their daypacks/bags/etc. in front of them once they get into the station. The Estacio-Stants train station is also on the notorious side.

The main thing is to just keep your wits about you in these areas and try not to stick out like too much of a sore thumb. Barca is one of (IMO) the most beautiful, worthwhile cities in the world, and your experience there shouldn't be marred by these things. Just remember that because so many people think it's worth visiting, so do the thieves! Enjoy...

dude, that sucks the fat one. I know of so many getting ripped in Barcelona, even 2 mexican girls having knives to their throats, but hey, I still love the city something chronic.
all i can say is, summer time for tourists and backpackers is busy season for the crooks. Leaving the cash cards in the deposit box where you are staying and only carrying what you need is the best defence, that and sticking to the well lit and populated areas. Going out in a group is also advisable especially if you are coming home late. There are some dark alleys in behind Placa Reial and off las Ramblas which should be avoided, but hey, if they do nick anything you might be able to buy it back on sunday morning in the Placa Reial, when the goons lay out their tack-tatty handbags and battered cell phones that they stole earlier in the week.
Thankfully the problem seems to subside after summer.
