So to put it simply, I went off on my trek around Europe, with both my bank cards (that's my normal one AND my backup) in the very same place. My wallett.
Oh dear, that day... I remember it well. Getting to my Hostel in Antwerp and realising my wallett was gone...
My driving license, my phone card, and both my bank cards! Oh, and 100 euros cash...just to top it off.
How stupid was I?
If anyone does happen to be in Belgium, or heading that way... If you happen to come across a nice, black wallett lying around somewhere... Just mail!
Note: That was last summer. I did survive the ordeal. I had money sent via Western Union (good backup).
Live and learn guys...

Yikes, shitty. We had a serious love hate relationship with Western Union. It's really good for emergencies though!!! Well, I'm sure you'll know what to do next time (in regards to how you keep your stuff. )

This last trip of mine to Oz was the first time I traveled internationally without having to use western union...
I cant judge you too harshly man, I've done some pretty thoughtless things myself. It just sucks when something like that happens because all you can think of is "Well shit if I'd just _____."

Ah, that's really not too bad. I know of one guy who literally had NO common sense when it came to that stuff
1. he walked out of a club in Barcelona at 6am ALONE (and he's a pretty scrawny kid) with his camera strapped around his neck & was going to WALK back from the club to his hostel (like an hour walk), so what do you think happened? Yup, camera said bye bye. He's lucky he wasn't hurt at all...
2. He took his hat off, placed it beside him upside down w/ his Eurail pass in it & wasnt looking at it at all. Needless to say when he turned to leave there was no Eurail pass sitting in the hat.
I'm pretty sure he would have done other stupid stuff, but as he was the most annoying kid ever I tried to tune him out for the most part...

Yeh on your first trip you realize things that you wont to do twice but Travelpunk.com helped me realize most of it before i went. But leaving your backup with the orginal probably wasnt the best idea haha

One word: Moneybelt.....Or is it money belt.....
I always stash my passport,a backup bank card and some cashin a hidden crease in my backpack which was always locked to something. I figure if somebody sees my backpack is locked to something, with the zippers unlocked, they'll maybe go through it looking for an ipod or something (which obviously isn't in it), but not bother trying to take the whole thing. No way they'd find my hidden spot very quickly either.
Oh yeah, and always bring at least one copy of your passport with you for casual ID.
