Hey,

So I'm taking off for a year to go work/travel in London England. Being from Ontario, I wentto the local OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) office and told 'em I wanted my coverage switched to "coverage aborad". Or whatever it's called.

Anyway, apparently you only get 2 years of coverage abroad in your whole life. I know some of you folks have travelled for more than 2 years... how does one get around this? I'm okay with using up a year now, but I know in the future I'll be taking off again. I want to be sure i'll still have that option later on in my life.

One option is to buy health coverage for your travels. I'm covered under OHIP still because I haven't used up my 2 years yet but I know in the future I'll need some additional health coverage...I checked with a local Travelcuts office (they give good deals to non-students as well) to see what rates are and I was quoted a decent coverage package for $400 for 12 months.

I wouldn't worry about it until you've used up your 2 years, though...

Well, look at it this way...if you're not living in Canada, then you're not paying taxes in Canada. Therefore, you're not paying for your insurance...so buy medical insurance to cover you while you're abroad.
