I prefer a visa/mc debit card, myself. Traveller's cheques can be a royal pain in the arse.

Cash from ATM machines.. they're plentiful and you get the best exchange rate. Just be sure to notify your bank that you're going to be in whatever country for X period of time so they don't suspect fraud and freeze your account on you.

I brought a couple traveller's cheques with me just for back up & piece of mind. If you don't end up using them either cash them at home or use them to get super drunk on your last day of travelling.

But I completely agree with SV that they are a pain in the ass. They're outdated now, stick with debit & credit.

Yep, I'm with you guys. I'm bring my credit and debit cards and will keep a bit of cash tucked away somewhere for if there is an emergency. The bank tried very hard to get me to order some but I was like, "Have you been to Europe before?" She gave me a blank look and finally dropped the issue. :D

I'm mean though. LOL.

Only place to use travelers checks is in less developed countries where ATM's may not be available. This is of course becoming less and less of an issue. If I were to take an around the world trip I would bring maybe $500 USD or 500 Euro in Traveler's checks for that reason. Other than that its ATM. Europe has ATM's all over so its not a problem.

Have a great time in A-dam!

I saw an add recently for an American Express prepaid travel card. You can put a certain amount of money on it, it will work like an amex card. I think you can get cash as well. Plus its guaranteed if you lose it to get your cash back to in two days or something like that.

I personally only use Visa and a debit card, plus I stash a small amount of cash hidden away somewhere as a backup. I see no reason for travelers checks, but that's my personal choice.

The Amex prepaid card is a cool idea... just keep in mind that outside of the US and major European countries (hell, even in them) FAR fewer merchants accept Amex than MC/Visa.
