excercising while on a trip
the last few months ive become a right health nut and have been caining it down the jim every other day as well as cycling many miles each day and training for longer bike races in summer. im off to asia again at end of july - and ive always been healthy out there compared to how i used to be, but now i cant see how i will maintain this level of health and discipline. i cant go to a gym as i wont be anywhere for long, swimming is good but i wont be spending much time by the sea and obviously my bike isnt coming with me and its far too hot and the drivers are mental so cycling isnt much an option (although im gonna rent one when exploring angkor wat)
what do you all do to keep fit on holiday? especailly in a very hot climate. im asthmatic and the heat does get to my lungs after a while. also as a vegan i never eat out, not in the last year, only i cook for myself and i eat very well, im beginning to realise this wont be so easy when im in more remote parts where there is not much healthy choices.

i guess theres alot of excercises you can do without equipment- take a skipping rope (light and easy to take) or you could do isometrics- its like using your own body as resistance (or something, my bf just tried explaining it to me to tell you hah) like doing squats...he said you could hold your pack at the same time to buid up more resistance.
i rememeber years ago, he would get up about 6am and go for a massive run around random streets in tokyo. he still kept fit, and got his bearing pretty well too.

When I was traveling in Europe 2 summers ago I was running about 50 miles a week. A few buddies were running near 90/week (145km).
We got the miles in, but it can be difficult in some cities. I have no idea what E. Asia is like for running parks/paths but possibly you can find some areas to run. In London we ran a few loops around Hyde park. The country runs were by far the best.
One of my favourite things about running through a city/country is that you get to see so much more of the area then you probably would have. We went back to some places that looked cool after running by them.
It's a sad thing, but being a female might make running a bit more difficult.
Oh, and don't run around without shirts in most other countries. We got our picture taken in Germany (Englischer Garten - theres nude sunbathing, I thought this was odd), also in Italy we had some old guys yelling t-shirt (in italian) to us as we began a run.
Otherwise if you want to do some other sort of training that keeps the HR up a jump rope could be good. Maybe you could be doing circuits with the rope mixed with sit-ups, lunges, etc.
Good luck and enjoy.

oh, he just said you can do a few excercises with your bed too, step ups and dips. im guessing you know what step ups are, but the dips are the ones where you stick your hands on the edge of the bed and your bum sorta mid air from the floor then use your arms to push up and down.
i just told jas to write out a backpackers fitness plan (hes a personal trainer) so hopefully he has time to do that today, and ill post it up for you later

haha awesome ideas people keep em coming, and a fitness plan would be wicked, props to the writer
i know in kuala lumpuer round the back of my dads house theres this massive trail where you can run - its 7k and goes up some steep hills and thru the jungle. its that trail which started me on excercise last year and since then ive lost 4 stone! so im keen to keep it up. i know also in bangkok of a lovely trail - i think southeast asia is pretty health conscious although im not too sure what it will be like in the less developed cities in laos, cambodia and vietnam. im planning on doing some trekking and of course, swimming and snorkelling.
im looking forward to running in cities - i can imagine it would be an awesome way to see a new way. ive got a good sense of direction too, i remember in bangkok first time i just decided to walk and take random turnings, i was completley lost but kept on walking and found the train again and followed under it til i was back near soi sukhumvit. brilliant adventure!

There's a whole list of exercise that can done without equipment on the go.
Dips - place your back to a bench or the edge of a bed, body in an L shape, legs straight in front of you. With your hands on the bench, lower your whole body down using your arms and back up
Push-ups - lay on the floor, hands under your body back straight - push your body up until your arms are fully extended, then lower back down - don't rest on the ground and do keep your body in a generally straight line. You can change your hand position to alter the muscles used.
Sit-ups/crunches - self explanatory, I prefer crunches because they're easier on my back
Knee bends - Stand up straight, feet shoulder width apart, bend your knees lowering your body until they're bent 90 degrees and come back up. (a wider stance will involve your inner thigh muscles more)
lunges - take a large step forward, keeping both feet facing forward, then bend both knees until your back knee reaches the ground (don't allow your front knee to go past your ankle, spread your legs further apart if needed) then stand back up and bring your feet back together, repeat with the opposite foot forward
overhead press - stand or kneel with your back straight, shoulders back. Reach up with your hands like you're holding the ceiling up. Bend your elbows and lower your hands parallel with your shoulders and back up. You can do this while holding your backpack over your head for additional weight, but it works well just using your muscles to resist the movement (isometrics)
toe touches - feet shoulder width apart, arms straight out to the sides, keeping your arms straight, twist your torso and bend in order to bring your right hand to your left foot, then come back up, repeat with the opposite hand and foot.
There's tons more of this, not to mention yoga, which done right is really excellent exercise, and it uses no equipment (maybe a mat) at all.

As my experience it is good that do exercise while on a trip. According to me you get tired while traveling then if you do daily exercise then you can feel better while traveling.

I think morning walk and Yoga is the best option for gaining fitness and wellness, while on a trip.

To be honest I don't exercise when I travel because walking on the place is enough exercise for me.

I've been living in Madrid for a while now and I can tell you that because of their superb underground metro and elaborate bus system, there is no need for owning a car. This means that you are walking every single day. Most big cities in Europe are like this.
You're pretty much burning calories all the time, much more than I ever did in LA where a car is a MUST.
