Hey all my Canadian homies and backpackers heading up that way.

Be careful about this SARS thingy, especially if you work in the travel/tourism industry. I´m sure that you all know by now that it spreads by air and originated from China and has spread to many Asian countries.
So, if you are constantly in contact with people/travelers from Asia, be on guard!

I think I may be your only canadian homie (or hoochie... ^_^ _ ) on this site...Yeah sars. The world health organization has now pulled the travel advisory to travellers heading to toronto. Thank goodness. I think the whole thing went way to far. I think it may have slightly hurt the industry in vancouver. People hear Toronto, Canada and they think vancouver is right beside it. They have no idea how big the country is. If it's not the war, then it's sars!! :( geesh. With my new tourism job i haven't really encountered many asian tourists. Just mostly aussies, brits and americans (ewwww...hehe joking) But I'll be careful! no fear.

travelpunk 04-29-2003 11:19 PM

Yeah, looks like you the only "hoochie" represent'n Canada  . It's a good thing that SARS is seemingly on the decline. Whew! I was getting nervous on the plane ride back to LA from Madrid.
Hows Canada these days? Anything exciting up north?

crionnacht 04-30-2003 02:09 PM

no, canada is definitely not exciting right now, especially on the praries! :P

Diorama 05-06-2003 08:08 PM

ewwwww crionnacht you stuck in the praries!!! sorry :(

Vancouvers good. The weathers gettin nice. i got the shades out and in a couple weeks I'll have the shorts out. aaaah life is good.

crionnacht 05-07-2003 02:50 PM

the weather is surprisingly normal right now. *knocks on wood* very sunny out and mucho warmo. but grrrr, no mountains to climb

Canuck Backpacker in OZ 05-12-2003 01:11 AM

Ya I won't go home via anywhere in Asia, I think thats BAD NEWS!
Good to hear we've straightened it out in Canada, thats great news!!

travelpunk 05-12-2003 04:54 PM

Welcome to the boards, Canuck!
Yeah folks, avoid anything ASIA right now, until they give the "greenlight." I've been hearing that the number of SARS cases are actually higher than what was reported. Scarey

Diorama 05-14-2003 06:30 PM

crio-no mountains to climb, but lots of long, straight roads for you ;)

Yeah avoiding asia is a good idea right now. It's even scary for people who have connecting flights thru hong kong etc...I wouldn't want my plane going anywhere near there. But then again sometimes the media (as in the toronto case) blows things up. I think the only way of knowing what's going on there is too see it first hand. A friend of a friend is a nurse in hong kong and beginning next week she has to work in the sars ward. They have a whole apartment building just for the medical workers working with sars. She has too leave her family for a few months and can't have any physical contact with them. What a shitty job. Hope the government is paying her well!

travelpunk 05-15-2003 12:41 AM

Dude! Time for your friends friend to change careers d'oh  !

I don't care what they pay me! Better to get less pay, be with my family, and live to see another day, than to sign a death warrant . Don't ya think?!

crionnacht 05-15-2003 01:37 PM

oh my goodness dio! :o sounds like your friend has THE scariest job at the moment. did you hear how that politician in toronto (obviously not a very popular one at the present time) wanted to place any asian person living in the toronto area in an internment camp, similar to that of the way the japanese were treated in WW2. My sister told me this and I was absolutely shocked. :(

travelpunk 05-16-2003 02:06 AM

Damn! What's going on up north of the border, folks  ?!

Diorama 05-20-2003 07:37 PM

Heck who knows....Now theres news that in alberta a farm has some cows with mad cow disease (suspected cases). ah geesh. what's next!

voyd 05-21-2003 10:43 AM

Good thing I'm mostly vegy...

crionnacht 05-21-2003 07:41 PM

travelpunk 05-23-2003 02:54 AM

Ohhhh Canada...SARS, Madcow, Tiffany, what next  ?

Hey, I've got a vegetarian friend that eats a Big Mac every once and a while because he says it's know among vegetarians that the meat in a Big Mac is made of something other than beef. Soy or something? Is it true  ?

voyd 05-23-2003 06:54 AM

Lol, mystery "beef?" :o
Well, I've heard that if you read Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, you probably won't be eating at McD's too much anymore...

Diorama 05-23-2003 12:40 PM

I am NOT reading that book. There are too many mcdonald haters in this world. "Like omigod I hate mcdonalds, it makes me feel ill whenever I eat there" Then ten seconds later they go and have a quarter pounder meal. I love mcdicks. It's cheap and good and frankly just as long as you don't know where the meat comes from then you'll be fine!

voyd 05-23-2003 02:15 PM

I love how this thread mutated from SARs to 1/4 lb's lol... what next?

travelpunk 05-24-2003 04:46 PM

I heard about that book and I´ve stayed far away from it  !
I agree with Dio, Micky D´s is all good :P Been eat´n there all my life and I´m still gling strong...at think I´´d like to think that I am
