So, how cold can I expect it to be in London, Amsterdam and most of Italy October & November? We Californians hate coats...

I dunno about Italy, but you should definitely take a coat for London and Amsterdam. Being a Californian, use San Francisco as a point of reference - but wetter.
I've been blessed only to be caught in the rain a few times when I was outdoors there - luckily, I was usually prepared.
Dunno how many times I've said this in various posts, but I really really really love my snowboard shell for traveling to those parts. Warm, thin, light, and WATERPROOF.

I've got to agree with the guys...find something light and waterproof, then maybe pack a hooded sweatshirt or something to layer it with if you run into really cold and wet weather. Works for me all the time...

^ that's the point... it's actually "nippy" but sometimes we say "nipply" because of the effect cold weather frequently has on nipples.
