I usually try to take advantage of hotel gyms or poolswhen I travel for work, but since those aren't an option at hostels, there always seem to be gyms in the bigger cities in Europe that have day-passes, week-passes, etc.
I'd rather *see* something when I travel to interesting places, though, so I recommend bike rentals, rollerblades...
If you need constant aerobic exercise but don't want to locate a big piece of equipment, grab something like the Speedo Fit Rope (I'll plug it 'cuz my old bos invented it) - it's a bungee-type jumprope that can be used for various exercises and stows away in a bundler hardly bigger than a fist.

If you're near a beach go swimming!!
Roller blading around a park, going jogging, a gym. oh! in paris every friday night(i think...) they have this roller blading thing around the city and it goes for like 5 miles or something but you can just hop on and off. but like 4-5 thousand people are out there each time apparently.

I try to rent a bike in every city I go to. Not only will it be one of the few ways you can still exercise while you travel, but I think it is the best way to get around most cities. The only other suggestion I can think of is just doing some good old pushups and situps in your room and try to take adavantage of any beaches you might be by so you can do some swimming (there are not many hostels with pools).

I don't know about a bungee jumprope, but I just like a good ole fashioned one. Talk about good exercise; do that for 10-15 minutes without stopping and that'll get the heart rate up, way up....

I'm a big scenic views junkie...and those tend to be located atop towers, hills, etc. So, just plan one or two of those in each day of sightseeing -- plus a day of actual hiking out in the countryside -- and you should get your calorie burn in...

Plus there's lots of stair climbing to be had!! I went to Monaco for a day trip then hopped on the train to Paris later. I think that day, carrying our backpacks, we figured it was at least 800-900 and possibly up to 1500 stairs that we climbed. Plus all the walking to GET to those stairs, lol.
Whatever you do, the best thing you can have on a trip is a good pair of shoes.

I don't really believe in exercise for the sake of exercise, so I just try and do things that I enjoy like hiking and climbing and such!

I think "body weight" exercises are great for when you are away from home. Pushup are great for the arms and chest. Lunges and squats for the legs. If you can find a bar (not the drinking kind ) you can do pull-ups and chin-ups which are great for the back, arms and shoulders.

Technically, they're called freehand exercises
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/randy26.htm
I haven't done this in ages, but I picked up a good tip about what the Marines do to stay in shape (besides all the damn running) called the Daily 7, which is 10 reps of: bench press, military press, lat pull-downs, pull ups, curls, leg press, and leg curls.
Which reminds me, I gotta get back to the stinkin' gym.

Girl, have you ever been backpacking before??
Trust me...you are not just lieserly walking. You get a workout, and a really good one at that. You would be surprised how much walking does with a 30 pound pack on your back. Not only that...but you will be doing a lot of dancing, swimming, and hiking....guaranteed. I ate a lot more than I do at home, and lost about 10 pounds, not on purpose. So don't stress. I was just like you the first time I went to europe. I was looking up hostels with gyma like a complete retard.
You will be fine! Trust me!
By the end of the day you will be so tired, going to the gym will be the last thing on your mind.
Good luck!
