Do you guys have any good gift ideas for a friend of mine. She is 22, and moving to Japan in a couple months to teach English. Any good ideas of this she might need/enjoy to prepare or when she is there??? THanks for the help!!

Um, I guess a japanese/english dictionary is a redundant suggestion...
If you're stuck on what to get her that would be related to her trip, give her something that she would enjoy regardless, and is small enough to take with. Maybe a cd, jewelry, etc.?

Maybe a phone card? Or would they be cheaper over there?
I can think of plenty of things I'd like someone to bring back from Japan for me, though...

Money. Lots of it. Though even that might not be enough
Actually, you might want to look into getting her the book Culture Shock: Japan. The Culture Shock series is great for quickly learning about cultural differences and what may offend people in other countries and how to be polite. Since Japan is very set in its manners of behavior, this might be very handy!

Or even Lonely Planet Japan or Let's Go; surely she'll want to do some sightseeing there in her free time.

And if she doesn't have those little foam earplugs for the flight over, and a face mask to block out the cabin light, those'd make good "stocking stuffers"...

How about the DVD..."Lost in Translation" ? That was a pretty good flick......it definately captured some of the vibes of being in an Asian country where everything seems so different and odd.
Barring that....monogrammed chopsticks!!
Further to Mike's plane related recommendations....one of those inflatable, horseshoe shaped neck pillows. They look kind of stupid but make a huge difference for trying to sleep on a plane.
