If your looking for a set direction and timetable on where your going, then yes book away, this might save you some money, and will also ensure that you will have a roof over your head for that night.

As for it being wise all then time, for you, it might be, but for me, I will reserve for a couple nights before I go and a couple when I am leaving. What happens in between is up to me with no time table or set destinaion. It just adds a little spontinaity to my trips, it creats some unknowns.

As for how far in advance to book, if you going away between Mayand Sept, book it ASAP, If you book it through this site then you can cancel with 24 hours notice if I remeber correctly and not be charged. That way if you plans change bewtween the time you book and the time you go away, you can just cancel with the secuity of knowing you have a place to stay while you away.

Hope that helps ya some

YES, see that is the attitude that motivates me to take this first plunge into the unknown...I intend to reserve something in London once i get there for a few nights but then i am just going to wing it. Man, the more and more posts i read the more excited i get. Kinda' makes a guy feel alive!

Hi there! I definitely agree with remaining spontaneous and not tied to a set schedule. As you travel along; however, just remember that as soon as you find out where/when you're headed to next, if you choose to stay at a hostel that you've heard is popular and good, it's a good idea just to give them a quick call and tell them you're coming in the next day or so, and reserve at least your first night. Usually... once you're in you're in, so you can stay and leave when you wish...

I agree. Spontanaeity is what makes travel worthwile, in my opinion. Sometimes I book in advance but I've also spent some time walking from place to place and being turned away because there were no vacancies.

There is no shame in this. As long as you keep a good sense of humor about everything then it all just becomes part of the adventure!

And it also helps to find out if your current hostel provides booking to your next hostel. Sir Tobey's in Prague booked my Vienna hostel.

I to am Making my first trip...In fact I chose to just last night! Spontanious is what makes the blood flow and all but I am already on the way to making sure I have a roof over my head first. I plan on only a few things to be set in stone...My arrival and departure. May-MidSept I figure with railcards and bus info I have no problems getting around with relative FREEDOM but now the only problem is that ROOF over my head. I was reading about hostels and was worried about my winging it attiude. How long in advance do I want to book these? CAN I JUST WING IT AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS? I am 23 and going to get a youth card with all the good stuff will these help out?
I just want to make sure when I skip from place to place on a whim, I can get a cheap decent place pretty regulary.
