I leave for my first real backpacking experience in 9 days time and I'm starting to think about packing. My problem is that as well as going to many different places (from the mountains in Romania to the beach in Bulgaria and then west into former Yugoslavia), I will also want to go out in the evenings, which at times will involve going clubbing.

As I only want to take a few pairs of clothes with me, will I get away with jeans and trainers in clubs, or will I need to take smart shirt, trousers and (god forbid) shoes?

Interesting, but I've got absolutely the same question!!! I was wondering what to take? I was thinking even about taking a pair of dressy shoes for a while, but, man, i'm gonna be crazy if i take them! Or better skip clubs while traveling?

I think things are a little more casual the further south you go, but I know in northeastern Europe people dress pretty stylishly for the night scene. Girls could probably get by with glam sandals (lots of beads or glitter) which I've also seen on the beaches in Spain. Add the "little black dress" and you'll be fine. Guys probably need decent clothes, though around here trendy jeans are pretty ubiquitous, so if they look good, you might be fine.

About shoes for guys I couldn't say, I think this entire nation has a shoe fetish, based on the number of shoe stores and the mind-boggling styles for both men and women, so I don't think it's a very good example of the norm...

I went clubbing in KL and Singapore and gained entry wearing sneakers, collared shirt and jeans/corduroys. I managed to get into the famous 'Long Bar' at the Raffles Hotel in this attire!

I would take a collared shirt anyway to make sure you can get into temples etc

just bring a pair of khaki pants. They should be lighter than jeans anyways, and they definitely say a lot more for you than jeans...

don't take different shoes, you'll be fine. i didn't really take anything different for going out, i just wore tank tops and my same ole chocos, or birks with either a very causal skirt or capris. and if you get there and are really feeling like you wish you had something else, they have store there too.
