An old friend I used to travel with is now settling down into homeownership and blah blah blah now she's talking about us buying into a timeshare together (this would be in Baja Cali) and it sounds nice but I don't know. Why am I skeptical here? Why can't I stop thinking of that South Park episode? Has anyone timeshared before? Thoughts?

timeshares are only a smart idea if you have way too much money and in that case you should just buy your own place down there instead.

Run away as fast as you can. If it were legit they wouldn't have to pressure people like in the South Park episode. A friend of a friend just had to pay timeshare relief to take his away from him. You don't want the same vacation over and over again, anyway, not if you're used to real traveling.

I can't imagine spending the same two weeks every year in the same place. Bad enough to only get two weeks holiday each year, worse to feel obliged to spend it the same way every time. You could go for a nice trip to a different location every year with the same money and time, and experience different things every time.

Unless you really love the area and can't imagine anything better...then, I suppose it would be worthwhile.

But from your hesitation, I'm guessing it's not right for you.

actually with timeshares you don't have to go to the same place. If you buy a timeshare with one of the big companies then you get a big book every year of places you can go.

Yeah, you can book into a timeshare exchange... but you'll often be charged a fee for each booking (on top of what you're already paying in mortgage and owner's fees). One of my friends does this for a living, and they all consider the owners a bunch of suckas. Me, on the other hand, I enjoy the fruits of unsold weeks and get to stay all over the world CHEAP. So yeah, please buy more timeshares people, so I can use 'em

i once went to oneo f those time share seminar, they sucked us into it while we were on holiday by offering free tickets to one of the theme parks, just for going to the seminar. (all of the ppl at the seminar were on holiday themselves. i think they need to get u in a good relaxed mood)

i must say though that those ppl are VERY good at the hard sell pitch that they do. i was very tempted to get one at the end, even though i had sworn before we went that we wouldn't do it.

the only reason we didnt was that we were already planning on our big trip and didnt want any ties at all (though with this one they did offer holidays abroad aswell).
One thing i noticed was that they would show you "example" holidays (this one worked on a points sytem) where they would sow you just how many points u need to get x amounts of nites.

but they wouldn't let us pick our own dstintion and accom style and work out for ourselves what it would cost.

i tried to read the contract that they give while i was there, but they kept interupting me, and it was a buy that day or else thing.

when i got home and read through the contract i found so many clauses and extra costs i was sooo glad that we ddnt do it.

i do know some ppl who have time share and like it, but they are mainly babyboomers and like to go to the same lace each year. (and i think its a differnt system)

and given that you need to pay an awful amount of cash upfront, i think you're much better off putting that money into an investment and just take out a small amount each year for you holidays. i think the moey would go heaps further and you'd get to have a whole lot of different holidays rather than the same one over and over and over ...
