Default Where to travel next?

I just got back from 3 weeks in europe. I enjoyed the trip a lot, but i'm glad I stayed for such a short time. By the end of the trip I learned that most of europe wasn't really up my alley. Too touristy, too many museums and history that I didn't care for. The highlight of my trip was Switzerland and just being in the alps, biking around and seeing all the scenic stuff.

So from that, I kind of learned that I was more into adventurous traveling I guess, and not waiting in line to see churches or museums.

What country do you think would be up my alley for traveling? China and Iceland are in the back of my head at the moment.

Well, by the sounds of it, New Zealand would be a dream destination for you

I forgot to mention i'm on a budget. The plane ticket for New Zealand would kill me. And now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't consider iceland since it's the priciest country in Europe.

China seems like something to look into at the moment because the hostels are ridiculously cheap in lots of the country.

you should try eastern europe...and by that I mean Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Romania, etc not central ie Poland, Budapest, Prague which is almost as touristed as western europe

you could do the trans mongolian depending on what month you want to travel, and take it down into china

if I could do anything right now it would be middle east and/or the caucuses. especially iran I would love to do. they'll let you in without a guide because you're canadian...but thats my travel wish =]

I am like you as a traveller, and rather stay away from tourist hords and close to "real life" than visiting "monuments of the past"... So I have a few ideas to share with you.

In Western Europe, avoid capitals and spend more time in the countryside or smaller towns, there is a lot to see and do. Or go during the down season. I went to Paris twice in Winter and Fall, and love this city.

I agree with Lizz about Eastern Europe, and would add Bulgaria to her list.

Another option is to fly to Bangkok, and spend some weeks visiting the country, off-the-beaten path. There are frequent low fares for Thailand, life is unexpensive and you would experience a fantastic adventure-nature trip!

Central and South America are low budget destinations that would meet your objectives, however I've never travelled there so can't suggest specific places.

if its hiking outdoor nature skiing type things you like than certainly Eastern Europe is a place to go but also try Scandinavia places like Finland could be nice.
