Here in North America many of use come from European decent, me for example come from Irish,Scottish,English,and Italian background.

Before you head over seas, talk to your grandparents to see if you still have family where you are going, I am using Europe as an example but this can apply to ANY where in the world. I know I have family in Scotland, and I know I do have fome distent family in Australia. The next time I go I will do a little search of my family history...What a great connection it would be, as well as a cost saving factor when hopefully they offer you food and a place to sleep

It should not take alot of effort to go back a coup[le of generations to get this kind of info, and ya never know, it could bring a long lost family back togeather!

My uncle has visited our relatives in Calabria, Italy. On my second trip to Italy, I had tentatively planned on going there, too. However, it took so long to moped my way down from Sorrento to the toe of Italy that I ended up not having time. I speak a decent bit of Italian and was really looking forward to it, but had to cut that part of my trip short and head back.

Oh well, maybe next time...

Well i just found out that my partner has family pretty much throughout EU, but how much can we really expect from them? I've never even heard of most of them till this week and he hasn't seen most of them since he went to EU when he was about 10.

Sure it would be nice to meet new ppl that would probably be sligthly more tolerant of our poor linguistic ability, but all that connects us is a blood line, we have nothing else in common.

If the tables were turned and some of his relos came over here we wouldn't be able to do much more than take them out for a day of sightseeing. we just dont have the room to put anyone up for a night. And we don't have a car so we couldn't even pick them up from the airport.

Honestly, I don't think you can expect anything from them, but if you make contact and write a few times before you go, maybe a phone call, besides the joy of meeting family for the first time... you stand the chance ofa home cooked mea which to a budget trav'la is like crack toa drug addict

I have family in Austrailia, who I might be visiting, but I don't expect anything from them. I will still be staying in hostels and stuff, I would just love to meet them all again. I know they would kill me if I didn't say 'hello' to them whilst I'm over there.

I have Scottish, English, Welsh, French, Argentinian, and some Japanese in me. I think I should check out my family tree a bit closer!!!
