Hey,

I am leaving Monday (Aug 29) for a nearly 3 month backpacking trip through Europe, and I still don't have what I consider to be adequate outerwear. I want a light jacket that will keep me warm in cool weather and a rain jacket/shell so that I don't have to sport the oh-so-stylish trash bag to stay dry. I tried searching the message boards for info on good travel jackets, but I didn't find much. Please help me!

Thanks,
Sarah

Try REI. I like Marmot, Columbia, REI brand and North Face jackets. You can also try REI Outlet for clearance stuff.

D'OH-- I didn't see that you're leaving on Monday. Hmm. Go to a good outdoor gear/clothing store (or REI if there is one where you live, lol) and check out any of the above brands.

For the soft, warm layer you may want to go with a fleece.

I got this really cool Columbia shell, its almost completely waterproof and actually keeps in body heat really well as a plus. I'd totally reccomend checking out what Columbia has to offer.

^ yea the brands mentioned are really good! I will add this advice. Don't get a "rain jacket" they are often stuffy and uncomfortable. Buy a water resistant, breathable shell (made for hiking etc). These will still keep you dry, but won't make you feel like you are wearing a humidifier!

ps - the other benefit to a shell is that you can add layers under it, or not, depending on what you need, thus staying warm or cool depending on the temp.
