Thumbs up

yes, i have travelled before, but only out of suitcases. this is my first backpacking trip and on the advice of many seasoned travellers, i bought a really small, but comfortable pack.

i'll be in germany, holland, and northern italy from october 16-november 8:
(one of the long underwear are my sleep clothes)

3 pair socks
3 underwear
2 pair silk long underwear+ 1 silk camisole
1 long sleeved cotton black t-shirt
1 woolen black turtle neck
1 cotton grey turtleneck
2 pairs jeans
1 pair dress pants, cotton
1 very warm black fleece jacket
1 cool orange raincoat
1 pair closed leather clogs (very comfortable)
1 pair, un-waterproof hiking shoes

is there something i am missing, could do without? and damn, do i need a sleep sheet or a pillowcase, i'll never be sleeping in a dorm room - i'm going with my man - we want out privacy (but no bed bugs please!)

and i know i'm breaking the ultimate rule by bringing jeans, and then 2 pair!! but i LIVE in my jeans, i'm a very casual kind of gal. am i out of my mind?

I've always brought enough undies & socks to last my whole trip (typically 3 weeks) so I never have had to do laundry. Just think - the more undies & socks you bring - the longer you can go without having to do laundry. Of course, the trade-off is you're bringing more shyt and using more space, but such items are pretty small anyways. Wear thongs!

hey, that's a good point - i had planned on thongs already, and hell, i never wash my jeans anyway - the more undies the merrier! thank you - a great tip!

i'm with Voyd on that. I think they teach that in bachelors school ^_^ I'll bring 5-6 underwear and probably 7-8 socks. One dress pair, and about 3 or 4 footsy kind (ankle high-they take up less space). Theres nothing like a nice fresh clean pair of socks to slap on da feet

Nahhh....jeans are fine and if you never wash them, then no worries there. However, they smoke like chimneys there (Europe)so your jeans will smell of smoke probably more that you´re used to (since they banned smoking in any indoor establishment in California).

A pillow case gave me peace of mind. I'd take one, since they don't take up any space at all. Even though I stayed in privates, a lot of hostels can be a quarter of the quality than a motel6. I'd just lay it on top of their pillow and felt like I was right at home. Also, it can doule up as a bag for storing and hauling your dirty laundry B) .

great point about the cig. smoke - and yes, i have been spoiled here in san diego - you can often find me mad-doggin' people on the street whose smoke has drifted my way...i wonder if i ever offend anybody when my pot smoke is oozing from my house/car?

i'll just be extremely culturally relative regarding the european smoking habit and accept my stinky jeans as part of the adventure.

I actually prefer cargo pants to jeans, lots more places to put all your shyt. Plus, they're not as thick and they dry out much faster if they get wet...

I wore jeans on the plane when I went over seas, and wore them the next day as well, but my cargo pants were just the shiz-nit...tons of pockets, commfy, not bad look'n, and they take nothing to sry out if wet and the clean easy. I swear by them....and not to promate a big corperation but Old Navy has good deals on them..I got 2 pairs for 60$ CDN...

I ran out of money in Cuba a few years back, and I ended up selling all my cloths, my Corgo pants included...i loved those pants...the style i liked went to the discontinued shelf so i could not get a new pair cause the newer style sucked...Old Navy came out with the wicked styles a few months back so i got to FINALLY replace the ones I sold.

YE-HA!!!

And for underware, I brought 5 pairs of them, and 10 pairs of socks...going comando cuts back un the underware space!!!

cargo pants are cool - but - i'm more of the show off my butt in a cute pair of jeans kind of gal! i mean, i know, i shouldn't be worried about looking cute abroad, but - i'm only 22 yet.

i would do commando, but only in clean jeans!

plus, i somehow think jeans are warmer than cargos, cause i did consider something along those lines (more like cords though)

I'll throw a vote to cargos...i like the big pockets to put stuff in. More 'room to move' as well

As for that photo of David with the levi's...you just know he's going commando

On the topic of underwear, I trawling the net and came across a rather interesting tip:

Swimmers. Instead of usual undies, bring and wear swimmers (brief style or boxer-ish). Theoretically, you only need one or two as you can wash them in the sink daily and as swimmers dry super quick, you're set and don't require a lot of them.

Disclaimer: I have not tried this theory.

Joan,

I also live in San Diego, whereabouts are you at.
I am also going to be going to Europe about the 16th of Oct.

:D WoW how random.

Let me know if you guys want to hook up while you are out there.

As for the pants situation, I think cargo is more practical, but for this time of year Jeans are definately warmer, I am bringing one of each, best of both worlds.

dmac - yeah that is a strange coincidence.

are you flying into amsterdam or just happen to be in the city then?

you know - maybe i'm a party pooper, but i really want to have some quality time alone with my man on this trip. i mean, well, we live together - but a lot of our relationship has become business: laundry, grocery shopping, etc. so - not that we will avoid other travellers or miss opportunities to meet cool locals, but we're trying to spend some time alone... we need it.

i work downtown though - but grew up in lemon grove - live in north park.

Joan,

Not a big deal, I know what it's like to want some quality time

I'll probably be flying into Paris, I've found that the flights are cheaper, even cheaper through London, but I don't want to head up that far.

So you are a native san diegan, nice...I live in La Mesa, right up the road from Lemon Grove. But will be moving up to the Bay at the end of the year.
North Park is a nice part of town, bet you enjoy it.

Well enjoy your trip... Iknow I will :D

Im sorry people but I have to agree with Joanofarc on the jeans. Im also a jean man at home and away from home.

Your trip is almost here Joanofarc! Why haven't you posted your picture on our family tree?

Joanofarc hope you have a good time with your significant other. I know I did when I went to europe. Just experiencing the traveling, and new cultures, was very intristing.

thanks, llemus!

i'm kind of a would-be ninja, that's why i haven't posted my pic on the boards - well, it was there for a while then i asked tp to remove it - i figured if i remain anonymous i can freely speak my mind, whereas if my pic is associated with all of my posts i'd censor myself (worrying that, well, lets be honest - my man might read my oft lewd posts).

anyway - thanks for saying that about the jeans - i just love them - i am them... hahaha, just kidding.

yep, so i'm leaving on wednesday!!
wooo! wooo!

i'm really excited because we just decided to rent a car for a week and drive down from munich to the italian lakes, that i think, will be my favorite part.

Joan
I know right where helix is, but no I did not go there I moved to SD about four years ago, Lived in Santa Barbara before that.

That would be really trippy if we did run into each other unknowingly. Just think, we wouldn't know it and if there were someone watching us like a movie they would know and be like dude that's joanofarch and dmac, they'd be like yelling at the screen like... JUST SAY SOMETHING. Anyway enough rambling....craziness. :P

Hope the road treats you well.
