Thumbs up

i've read that when you cross some borders on trains, especially overnight trains, you give over your passport so that they can stamp it and check it without bothering you.. is that true? and is it safe?

thanks

Jess,
I just got back from Europe. I took 2 night trains and one day trip crossing borders. On 2 of the 3 they just knocked on my door and looked at my passport. From Austria to Italy they took my passport over night and returned it the next morning. I made double copies of everything that I kept in my money belt just in case though. It is fine. Most countries don't even stamp your passport because you were already in Europe. In fact, We flew into Ireland and flew out of Italy and those are the only 2 stamps I received on my passport the whole trip and I went to 6 countries. I wouldn't worry about this too much. Have fun!
