Thumbs up

Hi!

After great debate, I think I will be going to the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Ireland in the Spring of 2006. Does anyone have ideas on what to do, how to travel to the countires (inexpensively), how much money I will need to have and bring along, and where to stay? I hope to be able to go for at least two weeks in April-May with my boyfriend.

We want to definitely go to Amsterdam for the obvious but also to see some museums and take in the culture as much as possible.

We have a friend in England that we hope to meet up with, but Ireland and Scotland are complete mysteries to us. We would like to go to the pubs and view the scenery.

By the way, my family thinks I am crazy and is trying to talk me into going to Jamaica or someplace cheaper and "more within my price range." I would like to show them that I can have fun where I want to go even though I am on a limited budget. So please help! I need suggestions and expertise in making this trip one to remember since it will be my first time out of the U.S.

Thanks!

Kathy

I just returned from a 2 week vacation through Europe. I flew in to Dublin, Ireland and out of Venice Italy. I went to Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Innsbruck Austria, Rome and Venice Italy. You should go to www.eurail.com look at Eurail passes. All of the countries except England that you mentioned are covered under this pass. Train is the best way once you find your base city. I flew in to Dublin then booked a flight from Dublin to London for only 15 Euro ! The airline was called airlingus ( I am not sure how to spell it) If you want more detailed info email me at Chandy898@aol.com . You should also look into staying in Hostels . I didn't really budget this, I stayed in Private rooms with my husband for 30 euro a person. You can stay for way cheaper like 10 - 25 euro each a night. Hope this helped.

Yes, thank you! I was wondering about the eurorail passes and was getting very confused on what pass would work if they would at all.

What country/city is the best to fly into? How much do you recommend taking with you (have in an account you can draw from) and planning for expenses like hostels?

London and Amsterdam are the main transport hubs and so will be the cheapest.

As for getting by on the cheap:

Self catering - England was so expensive I lived off pasta or 99p cheeseburgers

Dorms at hostels

Buses are cheaper than trains

Anything else, just ask!
