Its just over a month and a half until I pack up everything I own into a steamer trunk and move to the UK. My problem: I have an entire house full of crap that won't quite fit. I don't want to put anything in storage. I've got a few family members that have volunteered to store/borrow the things that I don't want to part with, but the rest of the stuff I just want to get rid of. Does anyone have any experience in this? I'm thinking of handing everything over to an estate auctioneer but I'm wondering if there's a better solution. The auctioneer I've talked to said that they will take a 25% cut of all sales, but they guarentee that everything will be sold. I don't think I want to deal with the headache of selling things individually. While I don't want to just give things away, I'm not overly concerned with getting the maximum amount of money.
I'm looking forward to living minimalistic for a couple years.

Your thoughts?

I was just going to say craigslist. From my experience you can pretty much get rid of just about *anything* there.

What kind of things are you looking to get rid of?
You could try a pawn shop or something if you're in a pinch...

ahhh an enlightened one. ill have to check out craigslist too, but depending on where you live there may be group sidewalk sale things where you get a table for $10(sometimes in township buildings), or pawn shop type places...and there is always ebay...and tell all your friends...you never know which friends works with some guy who has been spending his last 5 years looking for that ABBA comic book you found in the attic.

When I sold everything a few months ago I called the local buy and sell folks and they came and bought a ton of my stuff. Ebay and amazon were also helpful.

I have to get rid of absolutely everything. Six years of filling up my two-story house. From tables & chairs to toothbrush holders and thumbtacks. When you start adding all the crap that you nest over the years its quite scary. I really don't have the time or the effort to sell individual items. I'll probably end up having the throw a bunch of stuff out. My bed-side-table was good enough for me, but I highly doubt anyone would buy that hunk of crap.

My girl and I are moving to the UK to work/travel. We're both professionals so we should be able to get along in London pretty well. We hope to get contract work there (seems to be common enough) and work for six months then take 2-3 months off for traveling. We've both quit our jobs here (2 weeks left!) and are going to live out of a trunk for a couple years. Working Holiday Maker visa lasts for two years. It's -35C out right now. That's pretty good motivation to get the hell out of this freezer of a country.

ebay it all in one big lot or indavidualy
good luck with the contract work, i would avoid agencys if posiable because they take a large cut in the UK. I would try finding work in your field in papers or online.

Who are the Buy and Sell people? There's a free classifieds site here called buysell.ca, but they don't buy anything themselves.
