Hey Guys, I remember reading at one time about a card or membership that you can buy to get you into hostels in europe. Can anyone direct me to where I can find more information on this. Also, has anyone gotten this? Would you recommend it? What is it for? Thanks!
You would be thinking of the Hostelling International card. In my opinion (and also many others) this card is a waste of money (it cost $25 US I believe). The benefit from having it is that it will allow you to stay at any HI hostel and you will say a couple euros for being a member. In small cities, this can be good as sometimes the only hostel maybe an HI one and they won't allow non card carrying members to stay.
On the other hand, there are plenty of hostels that are not affiliated with HI. HI tends to force rules such as curfews and lockouts on their hostels. You won't have this problem at most non-HI hostels. The best hostels also tend to be the independent ones.
I stayed in an HI once and I hated it, damn scout kids were running around the place till 3am banging on doors. They were worse then drunks!!!
