For your plane tickets, there's a couple things I'd recommend that you do (of course, you may be way ahead of me and done them already!):
• There are a lot of web sites that do last minute travel and such, like
www.cheaptickets.com. I'd check those out regularly and watch the prices for your destination.
• Find out which carriers fly where you're going (which I've forgotten what you said) and go to their web sites. Sign on to their e-mail newsletter that sends you regular (weekly in many cases) updates with sales. For some, you have to choose a couple city-pairs. I am on American Airlines' e-mail list for some of their cool latin american destinations.
• If you're NOT flying to the UK as a final destination, still look at getting the cheapest ticks you can to there, and then switching over onto one of their ultra cheap airlines like Ryan Air or easyjet.com. Check out the web sites for both of these, you'll be amazed at their prices to European destinations. When I went to Barcelona, I found a $99 each way ticket on Virgin Atlantic, then switched airports to Luton (or was it Stansted -- can't remember!), and on to Spain! Make sure you give yourself at least three hours (better if more) to make this transfer, though.
• Check the Sunday travel section of a big city newspaper near you and peruse the ads. Some of those advertising cheap flights are consolidators (meaning they bought the tickets in bulk and you won't get frequent flyer miles and stuff like that usually), but give them a call and check out the available dates.
Research, research, research!!!
