One of the last couple Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel magazines had an article on this. I can't remember exactly which issue, but I'm pretty sure most of the articles are available online.
I haven't been to Oz, myself, yet. Sounds like a cool way to go, though.
Oh, and is that "first footer" as in the Scottish tradition on New Years?

Thanks for the tip we will check it out as soon as possible.
We are due to fly to bangkok for 2 weeks before we get to Oz, we have not got a clue what to do when we get there? If you have any tips, it would be must apperciated.
I just know it from the Marillion song, whose lyric says, "I'm your 15 stone first footer..."
They explained the tradition when I saw them in concert once...
