Tourist offices are often central and easy to find. If not, try a major landmark or even a McDonalds.

I meant more meeting new people, this is the first time I'm going to be travelling on my own, so it'd be nice to meet similar people out there or arrange a few drinks with other travellers before I go.. was thinking message boards or is it easy to meet other people in hostels etc?

I wouldn't worry too much about that at all. Hostels are a full of people just like you. Just have a chat to whoever is hanging around and you'll be sure to meet stacks of people. I travelled around Europe by myself (I was 21 at the time) and was never alone when I didn't want to be.
If you're looking for a sociable hostel make sure it has a common room, if you're looking for a party make sure it has a bar.
