I know this is not really the most interesting question, but you guys are the smart ones, and its been something on my mind latlely. For my upcoming trip to Europe, Im wanting to take my Digital SLR and not just my little point and shoot. The reason being is that since Im going alone, I wouldnt mind taking some pro shots (im a semi pro photographer ...meaning ive sold some work but make my $$ elsewhere) and the odds of me going back to Europe when Im still young is low (moving to Japan).
Now my question is about security and safety. I know having an expensive camera makes me more of a target, but should I be more worried than normal? What precautions should I take? Its the Sony DLSR so its not crazy big or anything but its obviously digital.
Im mostly worried about paris and rome because the rest of the time , Ill be in the Scottish highlands...and I imagine Ill be safe there...

Go ahead an take it. I saw lots of people with SLR cameras but you may want to be more cautious at night.

i travel with a dslr and a computer. you will just have to be more cognizant of where you put your bag and you wont be able to just toss it around, make sure you have a method of keeping your camera charged and you should be set, i got lucky and mine can take 3 different kinds of batteries.

I just didnt roll around with mine around my neck, i made it a a point to only take mine out when i wanted a shot, this does make you less of a target, and it means someone cant just run by and cut the strap and keep running. I havent heard of this happening in a bit, but there is no reason to be the first.

I dont think you will have any problems, just make sure you know where your stuff is in relation to you and travel lightly, so you are less tempted to put your bag down

yep, keep your camera off your neck. invest in a good bag (I prefer sling bags as I can swing them in front of me), one you can attach a biner to. when you are in heavily crowded areas, use the biner to attach the bag to your belt loop. that way, should anyone slash the strap, the bag is still attached to you. also, keep your bag in front of you in crowded areas.

aside from that, I wouldn't worry about it too much. just keep your wits about you and pay attention to your surroundings. I took my old minolta dslr and no problems.

Do they have cable enforced straps for cameras that go around your neck? I would think that would help against most slash and dash thieves.

YES! Bring the Camera.. i AM a professional photographer, so I might be biased. . But it's worth the risk of losing a few hundred (or thousand in my case) bucks. . . Because if you DONT get it stolen, or you back up your film/etc. as you go, you'll have the memories (in great quality worth remembering).

My Nikon DSLR survived a trip to France last month, and just last week a trip to Memphis including one black-out drunk night in less savory parts of Memphis. Somehow I came home with the camera intact...

Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to take it. The gear is replaceable. The opportunity to shoot great stuff - not so much.

I agree with all who are telling you to take the camera. It doesn't sound like it's extremely bulky or anything, so space shouldn't be an issue. You will be able to get some amazing shots that a normal point and shoot couldn't produce. So many of the places you will be going are once in a lifetime so by all means, take the camera!

I mean...be careful with it!! But ya. I'm sure you would anyway~
