Rome In the Winter
I know this is probally a lame question, but I had to ask.
As part of my month long backpacking trip this January, Ill be staying for 5 days in Rome. Ill be flying from Paris to Rome on easyJET and then just hanging out there...
My question is , compared to Summer... how busy will Rome be? The reason I ask is I can remember the first time I went to Athens it was summer, and the amount of tourists really ruined it for me.
Id LIKE to go when its not too bad..that why I picked the month of January to travel..
Thanks all for your guidance!

Hey!
I was there during early January of this year (2007). The weather was great, mild and clear skies. I had not been in Rome before this time, so I can't compare my experience. But it was not very busy for most places. There are queues for museums and different sites, but none where very long.
However, to ensure that you avoid any queues, get to your destination early. Also, a warning, the Vatican is full full full on Sundays (I think Sundays - stand to be corrected tho!). I would avoid the Vatican and the Vatican museums on Sundays completely. Other than that and the continually busy Rome underground, I didn't encounter much human traffic.

I actually prefer Rome in winter. I've been there several times, and its calmer and cooler, more vegetation, and feels somehow cleaner in the winter.

I can picture Rome feeling dirtier during the summer (same with Granada) I was there during the Winter Olympics in 06 and found the city to still be buzzing with life but not so much so that it hampered getting around or anything like that. The Vatican line was still ricockulous but you could move around the Trevi fountain and Spanish steps (<-be prepared to tell vendors that you aren't interested in their wares...alot...)
Have fun, it is, imho, the best city to visit in Western Europe.
