where are you going? I didnt use it at most places in western europe but sometimes it just made me feel better if it was a bit of a dirty hostel....in the end I ditched it though as I used the friggen thickest sheet ever to make it & it was taking up too much space in my pack.

I brought a sleep sheet type thing but I never used it for sleeping. Once I had literally every piece of laundry in the machine except for one shirt so I used my SS as a skirt. Also if I was cold on the train/bus/whatever I used it to cover up.

Most places in Western and Eastern Europe provided sheets for you or they had a non optional linen charge. One hostel (I'm looking at you Mitte's Backpacker Hostel in Berlin) made renting linen optional and I guess they figure most people don't have their own linen so thats a way to make 2.50 euro per guest. I opted to rent the linen because I wanted a blanket to keep me warm though.

For where you are going, I wouldn't take a sleep sheet either! I do always lift up the sheets and check the seems of the mattress for bedbugs. Always a good habit to get into. You are basically just looking for small brown stains close to the side seems. If you see the stains, ask for a different bed. Also, if your bed is agaisnt a wall with wallpaper, check the seems in the wallpaper as well.

Keep in mind that sleep sheets, like sleeping bags, are not allowed at many hostels. Largely because they're afraid you might *bring* bed bugs with you.

Not that this is enforced very much, but it's something to keep in mind before you spend bank on some super-light, compressable sleep sheet.

If you don't want to spend a lot, you can get a queen size sheet, fold it in half, and sew two sides (in an L shape) shut, with enough room on the long end to be able to open and close like the flap on a flat sleeping bag.
