So, I will be headed to Mexico City for Spring Break. Hopefully, I can take a day trip to Acapulco.

As for Mexico City - any tips/safety suggestions/hotel or hostel recommendations warnings.

So far, I have been warned of the various issues in Mexico City. I for sure will not hail a green/unmarked cab, and I'll stick with the other warnings from Lonely Planet. I used to live in NYC so hopefully my instincts will let me know when I am dealing with a sketchy person - but I am still trying to minimize risks beforehand.

I am thinking of staying a regular hotel for the first two days and then moving to a hostel for the remaining 3 days.

How does it work in Mexico City for electrical outlets? Do I need an adapter (for my digital camera)?

thanks.

ps. if you've already been please share your experience

I found the subway to be an excellent way to get around. It IS packed at rush hour, so take the usual pickpocket precautions, but I loved it. When my girlfriend and I first got on it, we obviously looked a little lost. One guy went out of his way (literally) and walked us all around the station to take us to the proper spot...we met nothing but friendly people.

I think Mexico City is cast in a bad light because of its crowds and size, and relative poverty. I didn't have a single bad experience, though...

No, history buff me just went to the big archeological museum (forget the name, but great displays of Aztec, Olmec, etc., artifacts) and other historical sights.

It's been about a decade, so I can't remember lots of details. I just remember how pleasantly surprised I was with Mexico City. I was expecting a horrible, overcrowded, ugly slum, I guess...

have fun!
