How much do you think it would cost to send back a pair of chuck taylor trainners? from america although their not the heaviest type of trainner Am still wondering as my friend has asked me to get here some while over there.

any rough ideas?

also if we send things home later on in our trip and mark them as gifts does that mean that no mater the value of the items the recepiant wont get a customs charge will they??

cheers for any tips guys

Sorry I can't give you specifics but I'll use this as a free bump and offer a suggestion:

Perhaps you can ship them to yourself at a friend's address to avoid customs charges?

it's awful difficult to say for certain, since US customs and UK customs may be different, but generally, gifts with no particularly significant value aren't taxed (they try to encourage tourism both ways)

in the U.S. it's like a $200 for most things before they look at you askance... (unless you're importing a couple hundred pairs of shoes or something)

Generally, though, I've not found there to be too big a problem with import duties all in all, I'd bet you're not going to have much problem there, either.

I mailed myself stuff from Lithuania to Germany and Canada to Germany, and never had to pay taxes, usually the value of goods was somewhere around $60. Check your customs regs at home (the post office will tell you the limits) and just make sure that anything new you ship would be under that amount. If you have to mail your own stuff home (clothing you no longer need, for example) just mark that it is personal and used, and depreciate it accordingly, should have no issues with taxes.

New stuff, marked as a gift, again should be no issue - we mail parcels to friends and relatives in UK, US, Canada, Lithuania, Japan, etc. and receive from them, and never have customs duty issues. I can't imagine that the limit would be $19, that's just paltry. But double check with your post office.
