Default Backpacking Australia

Hey - I am travelling to australia in september this year and just want some advice from people who have been out there before.

I booked a trip with Ultimate Oz who does arrival packages so that way i get to make a few friends in my first week, go surfing, see opera house, blue mountains & stay in a cool hostel. But after that would it be better to head down to melbourne for a few months or just go do the whole east coast trip?

I was in OZ this time last year and I found the best hostel in Sydney on dollar for dollar was the The Palms which is in kings cross, but not on the main street with all the druggies and prostitutes. I payed $150 for a 4 bed dorm with ensuite bathroom and it included wifi(which is rare for hostels in OZ) and a small breakfast also there are supermarkets close by(Coles and Walgreens and for the budget concious Aldi a 15 minute walk). I met alot of great people there that I became great friends with, they even do trips to blue mountains and the beach with the manager Dan, just ask when you check in. Also if you are going to Melbourne I found the best hostel to be the habitat in St. Kilda because it's clean, they have free dinner night, free breakfast and do lots of activities but no free wifi but all the mcdonalds in OZ have free wifi. Hope this helps you out, I can help you out more if needed.
