I'm planning on having the funds to go sometime around october. Do you think this is a decent time to go? Whats the weather like? I would like to go when its still enjoyable to be outside. What do you think?

It really depends on where you go, but in general, autumn in Europe is fantastic because it's so much less crowded in the summer. If you're in the northern half (I'd say middle of France and points north) be prepared for rain at any given time. Personally, I don't mind the rain at all, and the trade-off of avoiding the crowds in the latter half of the year is VERY worthwhile. Things also tend to be cheaper then, which is always a bonus!

I think that any time between late September and early May are the best times to go to Europe. No offense to the school-holiday travelers on the boards (y'all are cool), but it's aggravating to deal with hordes of school kids whose only exposure to Europe is MTV's "Real World [what a frickin fallacy THAT is] Paris" or the movie "Eurotrip" or some other such garbage.

Plus like Omisan says things are generally cheaper-- airfare significantly more so.

Dont go in the summer or the dead of winter, your timing sounds perfect. Go for it, love.

I agree, October is fantastic in Europe. You'll need a warmer sweater and rain gear, but the trade off for shorter wait times and cheaper and less crowded hostels is well worth it. Another bonus is that all the "seasons" will be in full swing (opera, ballet, theatre, philharmonic, etc) so there'll be a million things to do that the locals actually attend, not just big special shows geared to the tourist trade. And grim weather is highly conducive to sitting in cafes over a warm drink, which is great for people watching too!

Have a great time.
