well if you havent heard new york citys transportation department has shut down---that means no subway, no buses.....no cars are allowed in manhatten with less than 4 people in the car. so the only way to get anywhere is cabs and walking.

im pro-union but this makes me hate unions, thats what sports teams do they hold the city hostage. they have no respect for the citazens and they always get away with there demands.

i dont know what the mayor is thinking he is gonna have to give into there demands sooner or later.

they say there underpaid----so are we all join the club there health benefits are strinking-----most places health benefits are shrinking( its a concern)

the lowest paid transit worker i could find makes 53,000 and they say they dont get enough respect thats also one of there other reasons----most people dont get respect in there jobs

cab drivers are charging $10 a mile---price gauging

i hope no one loses there job---im sure most companies will be flexible for a little while----most people who work in manhatten dont live there.

Ummm... 53k in New York? That would be the equivalent of 24k in Chicago. That's NOT a lot of money. Barely poverty level. New York is the most expensive city to live in the states. These people just want to make a decent living and if they have to fight for it, they have to fight for it. I'm not saying what they're doing is right (I haven't been following all that closely) but if it's the only way they can get their demands met, then so be it. Perhaps people are in as shitty or shittier positions, but the New York transport people are at least willing to fight for their cause.

i found out this is what the majority of the strike is about.

they want a 24 percent pay raise in the next 3 years--------the city only wants to give them 8 percent

right now they pay nothing ( zero ) for health care-----they city wants them to pay $50 or $100 bucks a month

the city is fineing them 1 million dollars a day for going on strike--------who is gonna pay that ..........the people of new york city

right now you can retire at age 55 and get a pension-------the city wants to rasie that to age 62

Here is the issue with fighting for what you think you deserve. It is illegal to walk out of a union job and put a stranglehold on transportation systems like that. Remember the last major walkout by airline pilots. By state law every worker who walks loses 2 days pay for every day they are on strike. When the federal gov't walks in, it will be a sad day for those workers. Strength in numbers does not work when you disrupt the largest financial center in the U.S., many will probably lose their jobs and then they will have nothing. These are things people don't think about. Either make 53k a year or walk and be stubborn about it and lose everything you have. It amazes me all these union contracts I read about and the workers bitch and complain and do this and that and end up with less than they were originally offered.

Unions blind people into thinking that the sky is the limit and anything they want they should get. Its not always the case. Not to say that there isn't more they can get, but its a tough case, and unions use blanket contracts. So your best employee and the useless piece of shit get the same. Which is why employers hate them. I bet if they were able to dump their lowest 5% of employees they could get what they wanted.

I think they are being ridiculous and greedy. sit down at the table and fuckin compromise. it's already inconvienced me as well as millions of others. I understand they have their needs and wants but that shouldn't interfere with the lives of others. i think they should find common ground, and they should work with the city a little

Umm.. I think that's the point of a strike. If strikes and walkouts didn't affect the livelihood (and bottom line) of others, people wouldn't bother with 'em.
