The other moto-conchos that jumped to his defense were probably not even friends of his. They are just other guys defending their fellow "countryman"...Whenever there is an accident here, all the locals stop and stick their nose into it.

That's HIDEOUS!! I mean...they all probably saw it...saw that it wasn't your fault...and yet they were there to defend the crook. Where is the common decency? Gah.

On another note, this girl that I have never met and doesn't know me left a comment on my myspace blog on this very topic.
entry and comment in question
My question to you, people that have the time to check her comment out...Do you feel like I am out of line on what I wrote? Is my anger not justified? Is she just speaking to hear her own voice? I do believe she has a valid arguement, but I just feel as though it is a little out of place coming from someone who doesn't know me.
Am I completely out of whack by expecting the police to protect me instead of the locals simply because I have more money than them? What does that teach these people? That it is ok to slam yourself into cars...or not even ok, it is GOOD and PROFITABLE to slam yourself into cars? I just do not see the logic here.
I realize that what I wrote was harsh, and coming from a little white girl, may be a little hard for an African American girl to take. But I still feel like she was being a bit judgemental...
Thoughts?

Totally random. I think your personal blog is a place for you to rant and rave and say whatever the hell you want. If you're feeling discriminated against...you should be able to say it, without some stranger judging and criticizing you. From my perspective...you aren't out of whack.

People do it in tha 'hood in the US, too. It's not just in the DR or foreign countries. Hitting a car is seen as a mealticket all over the place, unfortunately. Granted, your case is different in that it was obviously the other guy's fault, but the prevailing attitude, even among many cops here is, "Just let your insurance take care of it..." so the scumbags win.

Even she admits she got similarly scammed - and yet seems to be apologizing for them?
What's her personal stake in the DR - family, relatives? Cuz she's sounding a little DRcentric herself. In fact, an anti-Muslim Christian Latina according to her profile. But lecturing to someone else about cultural tolerance? Lol..
Now yes, I agree you should learn the language and ethical customs of your host country - but not doing so also shouldn't justify you getting ripped-off dishonestly!
There may always be bigger issues at play here, but I think criticism against scams and unethical con games is fair criticism, no matter who it's against. And what about those kids who keyed your car? What excuse is there for that? Is that just the DR "way" that simply must be accepted without question?
Hey, we got ripped off in China once with a long taxi ride. Am I gonna defend that as "China's way?" No, I understand why some poor driver did it - but I still think it's wrong. Fortunately, it only ended up costing like $20 - the normal price for a US cab, so no big deal. But if he was really so desperate - he could have asked and I would have given him a big tip..
Guests should definitely give their host countries due respect - but they should also respect their guests if the relationship is legitimate and symbiotic. After all, your dad did sink money into the local economy by buying those condos and attracting more tourists, right? So, it's not like he's a parasite on their economy - but actually helping it.

I didn't even see that blog entry about her feelings towards Muslims. Anyway, she replied to my blog again saying that she was offended by what I wrote. Well shit happens. My wallet is offended for having to pay off some scumbag simply because I have more money than he does.

^ Lol, wow she is REALLY anti-Muslim:

I don't understand why no one wants to offend what is quite apparently a religion fueled by hatred, intolerance, violence and quite possibly Satan himself.

And extremely ethnocentric (with Jews):
Quote:
As a Christian I am taught to love Israel. The Bible says, "blessed are those who bless Israel, and cursed are they who curse her". Do I believe that Israel consists only of a nation in the Middle East?...no. She is everywhere...wherever the tribes are found. Wherever the children of the most High God are found. Through Christ I was grafted into Israel.
|
Well, unfortunately she appears to fall into the sanctimonious hypocritical Christian category (no offense, anyone)...
How ironic, yet typical, huh?

I'm of the school of thought that anything read on MySpace should be taken about as seriously as Krusty the Clown. It's seriously the new Lowest Common Denominator of the internet since AOL's decline into irrelevance.
