Is there a set import duty for products from Europe? I think in Ireland you just get 30% stuck onto the price of whatever you import but I don't think it works that way in the US, or does it?

If you're referring to the monetary value of products you bring into the United States from Europe, yes there is a certain "limit" and then you start paying tax.
I can't tell you off hand, let me get my travel and tourism book out but I'm guessing its out of date by now.

My book claims duty free up to $800 for "most destinations" only including the Caribbean and Virgin Islands as exemptions for that rule.

I'm having no luck on the US customs site, they keep going on about this big book that has all the different rates for different products but I can't find a clear thing that says if the products worth so much the duty is this much.
I think the value of the product is around $1100 so I'm still none the wiser.

Them's different laws than what SGRHewitt was talking about. Like if you were importing coffee into the USA then there is NO import tax on it because it's a product that we can not make or manufacture. So it depends on the product mate.

The place where I work sells folding attic stairs and we get a few people from the US buying the stairs and one asked how much duty he'd have to pay. He said he got a pair of shoes from England before and the duty ended up being the same as the cost of the shoes, so he's wary.
