Its offcialy "tartan day" today in America and Canada today. Its supposed to be a day to celebrate Scotland's contribution to north America and promote modern Scotland. Theres going to be a parade on the 8th in New york with 7000 bagpipers and a bunch of other events. Its also a chance for the Scottish executive (Scotlands devolved government) to go for a wee holiday in the states.
April the 6th was chosen as its the anniversary of Scotlands declaration of independece from 1320 - the decraltion of Arbroath, which the American declaration was based on. Like all other important Scottish days it isnt a holiday here and most people wont have a clue about it. But its good to see such events in the US and Canada.
