Its offcialy "tartan day" today in America and Canada today. Its supposed to be a day to celebrate Scotland's contribution to north America and promote modern Scotland. Theres going to be a parade on the 8th in New york with 7000 bagpipers and a bunch of other events. Its also a chance for the Scottish executive (Scotlands devolved government) to go for a wee holiday in the states.
April the 6th was chosen as its the anniversary of Scotlands declaration of independece from 1320 - the decraltion of Arbroath, which the American declaration was based on. Like all other important Scottish days it isnt a holiday here and most people wont have a clue about it. But its good to see such events in the US and Canada.

It's all about Clan Gordon.
Happy Tartan Day!

Not all surnames have a tartan as they only started registering clan tartans in 1815 so surnames that were once prominent (my one for example) weren’t important enough in 1815 to get one registered. Before that it was done by what region you were from... as in the days of clan warfare you wouldn’t always want people to know your surname!
Alot of surnames nowadays are 'septs' of other bigger clans so if your name was part of another clan you could wear the tartan. Most people aren’t that bothered about it and just wear any tartan they want as well as the national and regional ones.

Okay, so my last name "Demana" is obviously not Scottish. But, here in the States, we're mutts of all sorts.
My Grandmother on my Mom's side had a maiden name of....Wallace!
Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots, wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome to your gory bed,
Or to victory!
Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o' battle lour,
See approach proud Edward's power—
Chains and slavery!
Wha will be a traitor-knave?
Wha can fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a slave?
Let him turn and flee!
Wha for Scotland's king and law
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand or freeman fa',
Let him follow me!
By oppression's woes and pains,
By your sons in servile chains,
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!
Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in ev'ry foe!
Liberty's in ev'ry blow!
Let us do or die!
<span style=\'color:red\'>freedom!!!</span>
