Ok Kids,
This thread is two fold. First off I am now selling Subaru's and used luxury imports in a southwest suburb of Phoenix and I was thinking about crazy car buying experiences any of ya'll might have.

Secondly, I am thinking I might have some problems generating the number of sales I would like to get and was wondering if any of ya'll have any ingenius marketing schemes for me!

Thanks for the stories and the ideas!

Way to go, some of those guys make great money. I had a pressure sales job in London selling paintbal tickets, and I was amazed at how a good pitch really makes all the difference in pressure sales. The guys who did really good, by the end of thier pitch, made it seem natural that you now would buy paintball tickets, the only question was how many. I never really got that good at it, but its a beautiful thing to watch when done correctly.

the trick Jake, from a former pro salesguy:

Never ask a closed question, IE, one that can be answered by "yes" or "no." You'd be surprised how well it works.

Determine their needs effectively. If they are looking for a Forester to haul the kids and Spot around, don't show 'em a fucking STi. Clear speech and effective demonstration of the product are a must.

Become a Scooby fanboy. Pour over www.subdriven.com and learn as much about the cars (and effectively the owners/potential owners) that you can. I personally hate it when I take a car for a test drive and I know more about it than the salesguy. Yes, I see it has leather seats and wood trim, don't tell me that! Tell me its got 250HP available with the best AWD system on the market. Tell me about the crash worthiness results. Tell me about the 10K mile oil change intervals, since that's gonna save me maitenance costs. Your enthusiasm will project to the potential buyer, and thats important. Because if you are into the product, you are likely to make them get into it.

But be careful, since not everyone is an enthusiast. So know when to reign it in by reading your customers well.

And most importantly: Don't prejudge. The kid wearing baggy clothes and bling bling may have Daddy's bankroll behind him or own his own company, so don't misjudge them.

I'd suggest to pull in potential leads, register on SubDriven and put a link to your dealership in your signature. You'd be surprised how many folks that sell cars are on the Vortex Media Group forums. And from friends that are, they get tons of sales from the web that way.

Hey Jake, if you ever wanna move north a bit let me know. My uncle is the GM of Lamb Nissan/Subaru in Prescott. I was thinking about working for him for a little while and might still consider it one of these days. Anywho, if you need any unadulterated advice from a guy who knows everything about selling cars, lemme know and I'll ask him for you.

Good luck dude.

P.s. Sell the hell outta used cars cuz u know they make u the most money. And like they said, always know yer product better than the customer. I can't stand when I go to a dealership and these guys are spitting off useless, and sometimes incorrect knowledge about their cars.

Later,
Jason

When I bought my car when I was 17, I had strict specifications as to what I wanted in a car. I was very adament that it had to be a four door and there was some other things that may have been kind of quirky, but if I was going into that much debt I wanted it perfect. I searched for months and checked out many lots. I ended up at one where I really didn't see anything I liked. I like to look on my own first - I knew exactly what I wanted and didn't want a pushy salesmen bothering me. After telling the salesman I was "just looking" and kind of giving a brush off, he continued to bother me, asking what I was looking for etc and trying to show me all these cars that I had absolutely no interest in. I kept telling him there was nothing there for me but he kept trying to push a two door on me and all this other crap. He told me he "might have a four door" coming in so I stupidly gave him my number. He then called me several times a day with all of these offers, even going into ones that were out of my price range. I ended up buying my car a few days later from a different lot and took much joy in telling him I purchased a car.

In regards to the not judging a book by a cover - I was in real estate classes and my instructor told the story of a new realtor showing a multimillion dollar home when some guy came in with long hair and torn jeans and all that jazz. The new realtor ignored him so the guy supervising him took care of the guy - the guy liked the house and had the money brought in from his limo in cash. He was a member of KISS or G'n R or something. The new realtor missed out on a FAT paycheck.

I cant begin to tell you how many stories I have heard about dumb smart-arse sales people pre-qualifying people for cars and houses.

I mean take me for example, I look like crap most of the time but I am rolling in the cash!

Ok nevermind I am a bad example, but I know what your saying. DO NOT PRE-QUALIFY PEOPLE!!!

Anyway today was uber-boring cause they arent letting me sell yet, they are telling me that monday I can start selling which will be nice. The rough part is that the dealership is small (for those of you who are in the know we only had 15 ups today and 9 salesman on the lot, ZERO of the appointments showed) So I am going to start taking measures to find buyers, like start volunteering at races or setting up a booth at different races and events around the valley.

I figure if the subaru potential buyers aren't coming to my lot then I have to go find them and con them into it!

kcl-what model did ya'll get?

p.s. I have a HUGE (spread across 6 dealerships) used car inventory if anyone is looking for something specific let me know!

If you wanna attract potential Subie buyers, you'd better start hanging around all the lesbian bars in the greater Phoenix area

Actually, Subaru's one of the fastest growing/well-identified car brands nowadays, so growing your market and finding interest shouldn't be as hard as selling a lot of cars. A bit off topic, but that's why it's so silly that GM is dropping its share of Subaru as part of its slim-down plans. It's about the only successful venture it's got money invested in (Fuji Heavy Industries, which is the owner of the Subaru marque) and they're divesting it to concentrate on losing money at home. Brilliant.
