this is a great poem that i happened upon while searching a recipe for japanese cucumber salad.

this is a link to my favorite poet/mystic, rainer maria rilke. i particularly like the "new poems" - if you're ever in need of a great (and short) piece of literature to take on the road, i highly recommend his: letters to a young poet (get the norton translation). one of my all time favorites.

rilke

and finally, as i am totally off subject already... my favorite poem by samuell beckett - i never knew i liked him until just a year ago.

cascando

i hope you'll all enjoy these.

This is one of the best poems I've heard in a while - just by some amateur kid:

Pain Immortal

Its been so long
My memory fails me once again
I only remember the joy and have apparently blocked out the pain

The comfort I once received running my fingers through your dark hair.
The silence of the world when our hearts beat in unison, blaring out our song.
Screaming I love you in crowds of non-believers, laughing at their faces projecting contempt and inward jealousy.
Dancing in the rain, skipping puddles, cuddling under umbrellas, keeping each other safe from the hateful world.
Ignoring claims that we were fools, mocking our doubters, and denying the existance of the "real world."
We were a team and we shared life's wonderful journey, walking hand in hand in the underbelly of society, laid under the stars of the darkest nights, our eyes so piercing that no light was necessary.

Reality's brutal hail came soaring down and razed the house that we created with bricks of love and trust.
Jealousy and suspicion were sabatogers of our faith in one another.
Lust, the unavoidable whore, flashed her legs and weaved her web that intangles so many.
Confidence mutated into cockiness and its flair is what toppled our tower.

Knives can no longer pierce my flesh
Spears fail to impale me
Javelins bounce off my chest
Axes break off upon striking my shoulder
I wear the armor of a broken heart
And realize now that my pain is immortal

Wow!

I wish I could share my favorite french poets and writers with you!!!

here is a weak translation of my signature:

Life is tender and soft,
Like a neverending spring,
Here time is no more,
Here come all winds to rest .

that is a beautiful poem, moc. and if those words can only convey weakly what they ought to mean in french - then - wow. you know. khalil gibran in his book the prophet, under his section on time - speaks volumes on life and it's timelessnes. it's very nice, you should try that - i have a feeling you'd enjoy it.

and though i know that reading translated versions of poetry especially are hardly as rewarding - please do share who your favorite authors/poets are.

i love, of course, anais nin - and have only recently discovered houllebecq.

wow! Nice links and poetry folks. Some deep people on the TravelPUNK network, for sure!

I don't know if this fits on this thread, but I like it and thought that it could be used for a little pickup

"Upon the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of countless millions,
who, while at the threshold of victory, sat down to wait, and why waiting they died."

Not sure who to credit for that, but it constantly inspires me to keep pushing myself towards victory.
