i've always wanted to do that too, but never thought it was possible unless you pay an arm and a leg to do it.

I don't know if you've ever seen the show "Breaker High" but it basically chronicles the gist of it......if you haven't it's pretty much a semester (of school) where you're taught all your regular classes (of course they usually only have a selected nu,mber that you can pick from for the participants) while traveling around to various places at sea.

their website is here

It is pretty expensive, so I doubt I'll be going. It seems like it would be a good time though.... according to some people it is just a floating drunk fest, but hopefully some people go to actually experience the different places and not just get drunk.

I've never heard of anything like that, it sounds like it would be bloody excellent!!! How much does one of these things cost though, sounds mighty expensive. I reckon if u have the opportunity, then do it for sure.

$15000 for 100 days...hmmm. Well, i'm taking $12000 AUD for 127 days, which is $9204 USD, but i wont be earning a degree while i'm gone. What would u be spending at home that you wouldn't be spending money on while u were on the boat - rent, bills, food, clothes, uni fees, etc. These are all things that you wouldn't have to worry about while you were at sea, so maybe the price isn't so bad.

Yeah, I suppose I'd be spending that much money paying for tuition at my university here anyways, that's enough justification for me!
My only worry is i've heard it is just a "floating booze fest" (to quote my dad. granted, he IS my dad.) I don't want to be with a bunch of kids who just are in it to party on a boat, I actually want to experience the different places and remember them! I'm not saying I don't mind a few beers...but I'm a little worried.

I really looked into this for awhile. Yeah, it's kind of pricey, but I pay that much for a year and don't get to travel, don't get lodging or get food. They have a message board somewhere for the people doing it and the people who did it. I think it's yahoo or something. Sounds like soooo much fun and you get to do so much. I read that you should bring extra $$ for land excursions and such. Yeah, I just couldn't afford it. So, now I'm doing this (backpacking) this summer instead.

i was enrolled in the semester in baja last fall but I went to brasil instead. I have a lot of friends that have done either a month or semester with NOLS and all of them are involved with or teaching Enviromental Education now. One is going to the instructor course soon I think too.

I am saving up to enroll in the WEMT course before my next trip. It's a month long EMT class with the bonus Wilderness cert. Very important for a career working in the bush. Well that and I would like to have it anyway.

I was all juiced up about the baja semester. It would have been the best thing I had ever done and probably would have been but Brasil was awesome and I will do a NOLS course sometime in the near future!

So do you need a lot of experience? I have been camping a few times but I'm no expert...and do you need to be going into a career that involves environmental teaching? I have no idea what I'm majoring in yet...but do you think I could still go on it if i'm not? and is it very hard to get into? k sorry for all the questions! thanks for the awesome suggestion!
