Good thing you specified - people may have been confused.

As bad as the seal hunt sounds you guys have to realize that it's the only source of income for some of the ppeople partaking in it and their justification in it is that it helps to keep the fish pop. at a stable level, another source of income for some. But I think it's one of the most brutal things that could ever take place and am opposed to the killing of cute little seals no matter how bad people need the money from them.
I just think if they kill them to make money or whatever they can do it without making it cruel...I mean..clubs!

Maybe this is a bleeding-heart leftist hippie psychoanalyst type of thing to say, but: I have to wonder about the people that can do such a thing to begin with. That goes double for the "hunters" that like to pose for pictures with their bloody, gory dead animals. Jesus. I'm not necessarily against hunting, but these people scare me.

I guess that makes me a bleeding-heart leftist hippie too...cause I'm with you on that. Not only do those people scare me, they make me angry!

Ah my dear, if you were a true blue leftist hippie PSYCHOANALYST you might have said something like: I think these people are clubbing these seals because they hate their father because they are in love with their mother. And historically, as in cave man times, the father would club the mother and drag her by her hair back to the cave, not to skin her, but to copulate. Then afterward they'd smoke a doobie or two because it wasn't illegal cuz they didn't have laws and that's the way it should be......it'd be a utopia maaaaaan.

Jason, you should know Freudian theories are becoming discredited. They're clubbing the seals because of video games and violent TV and they're probably all ADD or AD/HD and need to be put on Ritalin.

ok, since I live in newfoundland, heres some facts for you people.

with the proper use of a club, the seal is killed instantaneously. research has shown it is the most humane way to kill a seal. there's actually a long spike at the end of the club which pentrates the soft spot of the seal's head. its just as humane, and sometimes more humane, than slaughterhouses. like humans, seals sometimes move after death (like in those videos peta love to show).

the seal hunt helps control the seal population (it's basically out of control and has had a serious impact on other aquatic species)

those who say the seals are just for pelts are liars. we use the pelt, oil, meat, and other parts, and export it all over the world (personally I don't like seal meat. it's too greasy).

there is a seal cull in alaska, for you guys tooting your horn.

there are approx. 5 million seals, the quota this year is 319 000

the cute factor: think about it.

now, here's my opinion on the hunt:
it's no different than any other hunt.

Thanks for sharing that d fresh. I am a vegetarian and kind of am on the lines of why is it so wrong to kill one animal and okay to kill another? Yes, methods may be different, but do you know what hunters do when they shoot a squirrel that doesn't die? It usually involves a tree.

The whole "livelihood" thing is a toughy. There is no way I could ever club a seal..or anything else, really. Except maybe a crazed pitbull that was attacking me or a family member or something....but I digress.

There are rural communities, though, where they only survive due to a particular natural resource that they need to harvest. Is this so dissimilar to the loggers in the Pac NW? People want to save the old growth forests...but they are a way of life for some people. Granted...seals are a lot cuter than trees. It's easy to say the seal killers are bad people...but they live where they live...probably have done so for generations...what else can they do? Maybe Canada should start a seal clubber relocation and re-education program...and over a couple of generations, the people could be re-integrated back into normal society.....

They don't eat the meat though - it is purely for the skins...that bothers me.

i'll do this all in one post snce there's a bit i want to respond to.

kingcrazylegs:
I don't eat red meat, not for any moral reason, it just disagrees with my body.

"why is it so wrong to kill one animal and okay to kill another?" that's my question too.

on seal meat:
"They don't eat the meat though - it is purely for the skins"

that's totally wrong.
I can go to a store right now and buy seal meat.
it's exported all over the world, along with other parts of the seal such as blubber, organs, and flippers.
there are websites and groups out there that claim otherwise...they are lying.

on livlihood...well, I don't work in a seasonal industry but many people do, and yes this is way for some to supplement their income in the winter months...people who love living where they are and do not want to move to a big city.

newfoundland has already had a massive resettlement program. thanks to our first premier thousands of people had their homes moved to other towns in the name of centralization. believe me, we don't want it to happen again.

I want to make clear that I do not endorse or condemn the seal hunt. In the summer I spend many hours on the water (or near it) taking in our whales, seals, dolphins, etc. They are all gorgeous creatures.
I just don't like the fallicies that groups like PETA spread.

I'll state again that I'm a vegetarian and I hope PETA rots in hell. They are evil people.

Seriously, on this big seal hunt that is once a year, almost all of the seals are killed solely for the skins, and the meat is left to rot. Just read up on it.
