This will be only my second backpacking trip. I will spend at least 3 or 4 thousand dollars, easily. Some people dont understand why i would do that instead of buying a 50 inch plasma television or a ton of clothes.
i just say that i like to see how other people live and also love being in historical sites and seeing buildings older than the united states. what do you tell people who dont understand?

I guess I'm lucky: I don't really know any travel naysayers or people who are that materialistic. My family and friends haven't really traveled that much but they say they would if they "could", which of course is entirely subjective. My mom in particular and also my boss are very prone to egging me on when it comes to travel.

Travelguy, I think you already did that - by telling people that you wanna see how other people live and so forth.

Buying a plasma tv is nice - watching all the programs on a beautiful tele is fantastic, make no mistake of it BUT it can never buy you experience. Only by travelling you can gain that experience.

Also, one gains an unmeasurable knowledge simply by travelling. It broadens your mind and spirit. You can tell them that too...

I tell 'em to go crawl back in their hole and wait for the apocolypse to be broadcast in HD on their $4000 TV.

Or you can be rich like me and have a plasma HDTV and travel all over the world first class, pimpin' all sortsa bitches & hos.

Ok, I was lying about the HDTV and the first-class.

And the pimpin', too

Seriously, though, there's nothing wrong with spending the fruits of your labor on traveling, and if anyone ever gives you crap for spending so much on it, ask them why they spend so much time and money on their pokemon/baseball card/beanie baby/wig collection.

Anyone who hassles you due to the fact that you have spent lots of money is jealous.

^^ It's true. And anyone who hassles you is a little too caught up in materialistic things as opposed to actually LIVING.. They're the type who will end up fat and alone on their couches watching their bigass tvs (haha....im really hoping that it wasnt ure mom who was hassling you here....)

Isn't like on of the first things alot of people say is "If I had more money I'd travel!" Hello, I would so rather see the eiffel tower than have a painting of it on my wall, or see the pyramids and learn about them first hand then through my comp! Travel rocks and is definitely what I'm savin' my cash for. It's why I'm working on Good Friday! Yay time 'n a half.

Man, I could spend the money we have in savings on anything and every now and then crosses my mind but really, what would I rather have... a bunch of crap or getting the expereince of a lifetime? I think some people like to say they'd travel but so many people are afraid. While I don't get the money question I get the "arent you going to miss home" and "i just dont' understand why you want to move so far away." Peple bash what they can't understand.

Bob buys a Plasma HD-TV for 3k
Todd buys a trip to France for 3k

Bob watches a Discovery channel show on the Eiffel Tower and France.

Todd goes to France and walks on the Eiffel Tower.

Which guy would you rather talk about France with?

I've had alot of people bugging me about the money I spent when I was in the EU. People saying I have nothing to show for the trip.

I have tons to show for the trip, but its not something I can show people. You can't show someone what its like to drink beer in Munich, you can't show someone how frustrating it is too get lost and not know any Italian.

Some people will never know what its like to go backpacking, its their loss. When people say dumb things about me travelling I just laugh at them. My life is so much richer for seeing and doing the things I have.

Amen!

My new goal is now to become the ultimate backpacker. (see my post in general tips..) I am working 2 jobs 7 days a week to pay off my student loans quickly and save money. I am gonna sell everything, hit the road with 10k USD in the bank, and never look back. I am going to wander the world (working along the way) and see everything that I can. If money runs out I will do the Peace Corps, get my 6k (and an unbelievable experience) and keep going. I will just go where my travels take me and meet some amazing people along the way. My debt is my only tie right now and it is erroding quickly!

I say screw those people that poo poo traveling. They can crawl into their holes and wish they were doing what I am doing. They are ignorant to the absolutely irreplacable experinece of traveling the world over, see new countries, new people, and new cultures.

I am done with my rant now
