Throughout my traveling, I always run across a group of people, the largest backpacks I have ever seen, like 60 kilos of crap on their backs, a small normal backpack on their front and perhaps another bag lashed onto them somewhere else? I dont really understand these people, I think they are people who do all their transit when they are getting on or off a bus or airplane, I mean it just isnt possible to go walking around the world with 100 kilos of crap strapped to you. Can anyone explain this or tell me what in gods name they can possibly be carrying in those things? I have a rather small/medium backpack, 12 kilos at the most, with 2 litre water bladder.

Maybe thats the backpacker virgins this board mentions?

Depending on what type of traveling they're doing, they may have a lot of camping gear with them too-- sleeping bag, tent, etc.

I could see how, if you're traveling for a year or more, it may be all too easy to wind up carrying a lot of stuff!

To each his or her own: as long as they're not bothering anyone with their large bags, I don't see a problem with it.

It's what happens when you smoke crack just kidding.
I think some people just feel that they have to take everything with them no matter how much of a pain to carry.I used to be one of these people when I started camping about 10years ago and now I'm the light packing freak.I'm taking a 70L pack for my 6weeks in Europe this summer but it's only a little over half full.So I've got tons of room for any cool stuff I might find along the way ie:20lbs of pot or something cool who knows? And even being full up my pack is not overbearing buy that much.I just think anyone who has to take more than 45lbs of gear for travelling is crazy unless your up in a sweet hotel and renting cars and such

Maybe your right, maybe their bags are full of weed...I guess it wouldnt be that heavy ...Thats a pretty light bag too Pepin, I did 2 years on 12 kilos of stuff, like 3 shirts, 1 shorts, 2 cargo pants. Digital camera and that was about it...

I've agree with SV. when I'm camping while I backback I've always got a rediculous amount of gear with me. Tent, Sleeping bag, pots & pans, ground mat... the whole nine yards... plus even though I always leave space in the top of my pack for stuff I pick up... I always need another bag to get all my tokens home... (then again I only have a 60L pack...

If they are doing the camping + some form of sport they could have alot of crap, for example climbing or ice climbing u need a lot of heavy gear, (ropes, protection, all those clanky things, ice pickm harness, shoes )u could get 10kgs easy, and things like diving, skiing etc means u need to lug extra gear.

maybe i should just relax by the beach, then i wont need anything

I have never come across any campers, as for Pepin,

1 Shorts
2 Cargo Pants
3 T-Shirts
1 Collar'd Shirt
3 Pairs Nderwear
1 Toothbrush
1 Toothpaste
1 B Oderant

1 Notebook
1 Pen

1 Digital Camera - Fuji Finepix S5500 4.0MP
1 Entempo 20GB MP3 Player and Charger
1 Passport
1 Wallet

Money belts have not been useful once, I have one but I am leaving it at home, no need, I have never had anything stolen except from other backpackers....go figure.

2 Years, with contributions from Thailand such as staff Jackets from Schools and staff T-shirts. But still maintaining the same numbers of thngs, so maybe a light windbreaker, and an additional t-shirt or 2...I pack lightly, I try to see how much I cant take, and see where it goes.

Thats it, I had a camelback water bladder but I left it in a hostel on the bed, oops...

Oh, and a sewing kit in case I need to put a needle through my flesh or clothing to fix a tear...

When I came back from SE Asia last Friday, the customs lady was like, Sir is that all your baggage, all I had was my backpack, a nice carry on item. Ah...I am expandinig though, this time I am going to try for 5 years, without returning to the states. Going to push from Thailand into London using NO AIRPLANES!!!!

They might be smuggling babies in there.

Tancred - I admire your spirit of adventure! Good luck with those future plans -- that sounds amazing. I hope we can pull off something similar one day - working the other way around though.

Have you done any esl in Eastern Europe? I was wondering becaue I think I'm going to give it a shot next year. If it doesn't work out there, I will probably try asia. Are there jobs to be found? I am more than willing to bust my ass looking.
