So I have a regular job, shift work, 40 -60 hrs a week, go in do my thing and come home.
I enjoy my job, and it pays well...but its not what I want...
i want to open a Backpackers Hostel in St.Johns Newfoundland. There isn't one there, well not when I was there last year anyway. Its a great city, friendly, a lots to do, and I have family there
As of right now its a retirment dream, but hey ya never know what can happen...
What do you think it would take to start a Backpacker Hostel?

Hey CD, I'm with ya! I have plans to open my own business as well (not a hostel.) You can do it without too much cash but that means going into more debt, of course. Maybe you should start scouting out properties in the area to see what's available? B) And yeah, be prepared to put in 25 hours a day, 8 days a week of work!! If anyone can do it, you can!

Man, myself and my wife have discussed that numerous times.
problem: money. In a few years though, who knows?

i love the idea. well, firstly, yeah, money....you need the actual location. just a thought, you could always look at old government buildings that are out of use and buy them for nickles on the dollar. the hardest part m sure would be the start up, and the first year or two. you could always offer the "work a few hours for free stay" to cut down on some overhead.

I too have considered opening a hostel here in Atlanta. There is only one and they charge $19 per night and they have a monopoly. The problem is real estate is sky high in the area...

Foofiter, I dont think too many people are interested in going to Atlanta, especially not Birmingham either, where I am.

A TP HOSTEL CHAIN.........VOYD THAT GENIUS!!! Thats acually a good idea.........I dont think there really is something like that it would be the first one of its kind.....it would be like a budget ramada inn! If you could get somehtring like that on the go, and run the TP site at the same time TP.com would explode! man..........I'll put a down payment on an old place where I can make a hostel outta in Van or something........Calgary or Edmonton would probably be a good place too!
p.s. cant you guys just see the gears turning!

Not a hostel and not in Newfoundland but when I was in Ireland we talked to a bunch of B&B owners and they were saying that the government will subsidize 60% of the cost of buying a home in Ireland if you run it as a B&B for at least 5 years. Wouldn't that be sweeeeeeet???

That's the one thing I need to check out about that but they were telling us like we could do it....tho the folks we talked to might not know about the legalities
I'm thinking of talking my parents into investing in that as their retirement home in exchange for me to live there and run the B&B

CD, if you're serious about this let me know. Since I live here in St. John's I could scope some places for you.

A Tp Hostel chain would be awesome...and you know if we built up a reputation as Tpunk Hostels being a party spot, then we would get buisness based on that reputation...

I know in Canada they have government sponsored entrepenurial programs to help people start businesses and get funding and/or loans for them. That might be worth looking into. I remember reading about one several years ago where they set you up with a "mentor" of sorts in a similar industry and helped with business plans and that kind of thing.
Also, doesn't the US do the raffle for green cards once a year? There are usually requirements and eligibility does depend on what country you're from. I remember seeing ads on the bus for them in Vancouver.
