Thumbs up

I know this is not relevent to backpacking but i was motivated by the creator of this to try. I'm 15 so I have no credit card or cheque book etc. to pay, and have no idea about the legitamacy of the websites on paying. So, how would you go about it?
thanx. Sorry for the annoying question.

you could make a photo site using fotopic.net otherwise get a web page maker such as frontpage, or start learning to code in html

Talking

1) Choose a webhost. You can see the one I chose for mine - it's free. Basically, for the free ones - the more storage space and less ads it plasters all over your site, the better. Or, you can also pay for one if you're more serious and pick your own domain name (like this site, I assume).

2) Learn html/java or use some automatic template-type program like Frontpage that will do the coding for you. This was the best site I found for quickly learning all the html basics: Lissa Explains it All. Basically, here's how you code your own page: Write/edit the coding in a .txt file. Then, when you want to upload that code source to your site, just first change the .txt file extension to an .htm or .html. And you can also check the coding for any page by hitting View>Source on your browser if you want to see how they did something.

3) I would keep all my photos on a separate image host, like Photobucket. Then, just link your photos from there into your website in your coding. That saves space on your webhost as well as allows you to hotlink those pics anywhere else. You can also add counters, guestbooks and other junk by registering those services on other sites and linking them into yours, too.
Ok, that's it in a nutshell. Have fun! Hope to see your site up soon...

Most internet providers (AOL, earthlink, etc.) provide a free website to their members. And they usually have their own program to build it, too...

I've used geocities with some success. They have free or paid sites.

Ok so I've been doing websites since I was like...12 or something...don't know. Now those weren't anywhere close to decent sites and I refuse to let anyone see them.

www.freewebs.com - The host I currently use is free, gives you a ton of space and the only ad is a little banner at the bottom. I tend to favor freewebs because they rarely have some of the problems other sites have...server crashes etc.

www.angelfire.com - I started out with them. Free, huge banner at top of sites though. Web editor is easy to work and they offer HTML help.

www.expage.com - If you want a really basic site, like just telling a little about yourself with no big commitment try expage. Takes like 2 seconds to set up. Lots of banners though.

HTML Help sites:
www.funky-chickens.com - I don't know where I would be without this site. I owe this girl a lot. Lots of common HTML codes that I constantly forget, grr.

Advice from Amber: Start working with an Editor...or basic builder that the website provides. After you get comfortable start toying around with HTML. The basics then try harder stuff. I compare HTML to the Matrix. You know how they have to view through all this coding on computers? HTML is like that once you get the hang of it you can basically read it no problem. It's either very sad or a great talent. Don't know which. Sorry for rambling I need sleep.

I have used HTML for a number of years now. I used to be really good, but haven't used it as much in the last few years. But was just looking into using it again. The codes themselves aren't really that difficult. They used to have quick notes books that listed each code and its use, but I didn't see them the last few times I looked for one. I found Frontpage a little more confusing but that might be cause I am so used to typing the code out myself.

Best of luck.
