Default U.s.a

Hi Guys,

I’m just hoping for some advice really, some pointers, things I’ve missed, legal ramifications I should be aware of etc, so here it goes…

I’m 23, male, from Leeds (England) and I’m looking to go to part of the USA for three weeks (I can’t afford any longer unfortunately). My plan is in it’s infancy at the moment, but this is what I’ve got so far:

- Set off around this time next year (late September), flying to New York.
- Stay in NYC for 5 days.
- Boston staying for 3 days.
- Buffalo staying for 3 days.
- Cleveland for 1 day.
- Washington staying for 3 days.
- Philadelphia staying for 2 days.
- Atlantic City for 1 day.
- Back to New York for 3 days.

For accommodation I’m going to use Hostels, and I’ll be travelling from city to city via train - I’ve seen that AMTRAK do 15 day tickets for around $390.

My ‘Must Do’s’ are: Empire State Building and general sight seeing in NYC; Samuel Adams Brewery in Boston; catch a NFL game in Buffalo or Cleveland; Niagara Falls; White House etc in Washington; run up the Rocky steps in Philly lol; go for a gamble in Atlantic City. That’s the first draft anyway. I quite like architecture and history, so I’ll be walking around most cities seeing as much as I can. Are there any ‘must do’s’ I’m unaware of? As an Englishman, I like a good drink, so any great pubs/bars to visit would be good, good museums (preferably not about defeating the British!), generally places where I can get a good sense of America.

Cheers,

Sam.

Sounds like a fun trip. Cleveland sounds a little out of the way, you might want to consider stopping off in Baltimore instead on your way to DC. All the cities besides for Atlantic City have NFL teams unless you really wanted to see a Browns (Cleveland) or Bills (Buffalo) game.

Thanks mate, the reasoning behind going to Buffalo was Niagara Falls, and I thought I'd have more chance getting a ticket to game there, rather than let's say, the New York Jets.

Cleveland is at the bottom end of my priorities, so I'll look into Baltimore. Although looking at the AMTRAK routes, it seems I'll have to go through Cleveland to get to DC anyway.

Why not fly into Boston? I got a great deal through BA when I went in April. You can still fly out of NY if you use the multiple city booking.

Also, why not catch the bus? Megabus does a lot of those cities for alot less money!

I stayed at Boston HI and the Philly HI - both really good! Big but good. Why not try some coushsurfing as well?

Boston is great - the Freedom Trail was cool to walk, the subway is so easy to use. Now DC is amazing because everything along the mile is free! You will definitly get your museum fill there. Georgetown in DC is pretty cool as well.

yeah the Chinatown bus in NYC goes to DC for like $30 roundtrip, so less for one way. and definitely search for cheap one way airfares - they're out there!

Thanks, I was thinking the Freedom Trail too and really looking forward to DC.

Yeh, I thought about going by bus, but I'm only there for three weeks and I don't want to spend large chunks of that time sat on a bus, to be honest I hate buses lol. I'm happy paying the extra and getting the 15day ticket. I want to spend most of my time in New York, so flying into/out of JFK, with the 15day ticket to go elsewhere fits together quite well.

Have you looked at flights yet? I swear, Aerlingus has the best deals to the american cities filled with irish people. And you can just hop on any old thing to get to ireland (as i'm sure you know ). I had a friend who did that just a couple months ago, and flew into NYC for peanuts! oh, and check out the prices and when tickets go on sale for the NFL games. They're really quite pricey, so maybe do that well in advance.
